How would you make that selection, MD? Say you are strongest this year on the defensive side of the ball. Then removing the defensive coordinator would be maybe less disruptive to the team overall, than removing the (more needed) offensive coordinator and making him head coach. You see where I'm going here?

I think UNC lost a lot of D guys this year, so I might look at the O-coordinator. I'm a big believer in defense winning games.

If my theory is used, and they indeed lost more on the "D" side, then the "O" coordinator must be moved up. I'm guessing there is a lot more factors to the equation though. For instance, "D" schemes are more simple than the "O". Also, which coach has a better handle on understanding/coaching  BOTH sides of the ball. Plus you cannot overlook recruiting just because the job is short term.

It'll be hard to get coaches to interview until December or after bowl season
