Title: Our secondary
Post by: bama87 on October 17, 2015, 08:13:18 PM
Question for the group. Our secondary was awful last year. How much of the improvement is due to Mel Tucker and Kirby moving back to LB coach. I think a lot of it is just better players and a better front 7. 3 pick 6 is unbelievable. Thoughts?

Definitely Mel Tucker, who was an NFL DB coach with a solid rep. Technique is better & moving E. Jackson to safety & starting Fitzpatrick have been huge.

I have no idea.  I can say that I can definitely see progress with the young guys.  Humphrey was playing the ball tonight, for example.

Fitzpatrick is a true star who is starting in Saban's defense as a true freshman.  He wasn't around last year.

Humphrey stepped up his game too.  He didn't want to sit out another year.  There's a guy who has talent and a work ethic; must have Bama in his blood.

Having other guys available has freed up Eddie Jackson to play a position he is much better suited for, safety.

And the front 7 are nasty.

So I'd say all of the above.

Yeah, let's don't underestimate the contribution the front 7 is making.  With all of the pressure they are getting it makes it a lot easier on the secondary.

The defense as a whole is much improved over last year. The secondary, the D line, and the linebackers have to be the best in the country. When the momentum started going TAMU's way, I really wasn't too concerned. I felt like the D would step back up, and boy, did they ever!

Our young players have really made me smile. God, I hate to beat a dead horse but our Special teams have got to stop letting teams have long returns for TD's and getting the field flipped on us. I don't know why this happens unless it is lack of concentration. RTR!

MD nailed it IMHO.  In the past few years, CNS & Kirby coached DBs. But that left DBs without a dedicated game day coach.  Gotta believe having CMT to coach up the DBs in-game is making a difference too.

That is an excellent point.

Something else Jackson & Fitzpatrick give us on defense are playmakers/big play guys. We had that when we had the likes of Barron, Arenas, & Dre.

I think the biggest improvement comes from the pass rush.  The DB's don't have to cover as long.  All are factors plus you have 5* corners playing on the inside slot rec.  Plus the position moves have help out greatly.

What has happened to Tony Brown? Is he injured, in the Saban doghouse, or something else?

It's pressure up front and having better athletes more than anything.  Kirby Smart has coached our CBs one season at most (and it wasn't last year).

ETA:  I will amend that to say one season at most since 2008 or 2009 (when Pruitt moved to an on-field coaching role).  Kirby may have been the CBs coach when Saban first arrived.
