Wow!  They should have paid Saban to stay, and now he's the reason Les is less.

Saban, making another coach's a$$ quit.  8)

FWIW, Les is deflecting all questions not pertaining to their game against TAMU.

A lot of talk that Jimbo might take the job (but I don't have any link to substantiate it).  If he does, it will be interesting to see how long it takes for FSU to be put on probation by the NCAA... :lol2:

Glenn Guilbeau, featured columnist for "Tiger Rag", said on Finebaum that there is zero chance that Les will be staying at LSU.

Rumors are indeed, running rampant about Jimbo taking the job.

The grass is always greener on the other sideline.  They are going to regret this.  I am going to laugh if they end up with a middle of the road coach.  This is not a good year for a coaching search.

Of course Les didn't mind which sideline he was on, he would still eat the grass.

That's what a handful of people at "Tiger Rant" are trying to convey to the masses. One of them posted this:

I've come to grips with the idea that it is likely time for a change at LSU. However, finding a coach that can replace the success Miles has had will not be an easy task, and any who thinks otherwise is naïve.

Is there a coach out there that can improve upon what Miles has done? Sure, but the problem is that the vast majority of coaches, particularly the realistic candidates, are likely to underperform Miles.

Here is what history can tell us about how often the grass is greener on the other side:

Nebraska 2003: Fired Frank Solich (.766 W%) and hired Bill Callahan. AD said he would not "let Nebraska gravitate into mediocrity" with Solich. Callahan was fired after 4 seasons and a .551 W%.

Tennessee 2008: Forced Phillip Fulmer (.745 W%) to step down. The Volunteers have hired 3 coaches since then and sport a .482 W% since Fulmer was let go. Of note is the fact that Tennessee still sports a higher all-time winning percentage than LSU, but it did not insulate them from mediocrity.

Florida 2002: Steve Spurrier left after posting a .813 W% at Florida. It was a premier program in the country at the time. The Florida AD was turned down by Mike Shanahan and Bob Stoops. Ron Zook ultimately landed the job and proceeded to go 23-14 over three seasons at a school that took six years to lose 14 games before Zook got there.

Michigan 2007: Forced out Lloyd Carr (.753 W%) for his lackluster record against Ohio State (6-7). Hired hot-shot Rich Rodriguez and limped to a 15-22 record over the next 3 seasons. Followed up Rich Rod with Brady Hoke, who went 31-20 from 2011-2014 including 1-3 against Ohio State.

Alabama 1997: Even Alabama is not infallible. After Gene Stallings retired in 1996 with an .805 W%, it took Alabama 10 seasons, 4 coaches, a .553 W%, and a textbook scandal to get Nick Saban. That record includes their forfeited wins. Officially, Alabama had a losing record during that span and a .486 W%.

All top programs at the time, all failed miserably with their new coaches.

In fact, since 2000, I can only find 4 programs that have replaced coaches with .700+ W% and had even greater success with the newcomer. Furthermore, no program has ever forced out a coach with a winning percentage higher than .700 AND found a successor who generated better results.

TCU "replaced" Dennis Franchionne (.714 W%) with Gary Patterson in 2000 after Franchionne took the Alabama job. Patterson has led TCU to a .750 W% since then.

Boise State in 2000 replaced Dirk Koetter (.722 W%) with Dan Hawkins, who posted a .828 W% from 2001-2005. Boise found even greater success replacing Hawkins with Chris Petersen who produced a .885 W% from 2006-2013.

Miami in 2001 replaced Butch Davis (.718 W%) with Larry Coker, who went 60-15 from 2001-2006 for an .800 W%. Coker was fired in 2006 after posting consecutively worse seasons each year. Although Coker improved upon Butch Davis' winning percentage, I don't think anyone would consider Coker a success story.

And finally, LSU in 2005, who replaced Nick Saban and his .750 W% with Les Miles, who has posted an .775 W% since then.

Long story short, any rational observer can see that there should be significant concern over the ability to replace Miles with someone who will generate greater success.

The guy is spot on. They need to be very careful about what they wish for

Really the only area where Les needs to improve is QB development.  They should have been getting their QB ready in the first part of the season instead of just riding Fournette game in and game out against lesser opponents.  With even a modest threat of a passing game LSU would be tough.

I can't imagine why Jimbo would consider it, unless he just wants a change of scenery because of all of the things going on in his personal life.  He has it made at FSU and will likely just use LSU to get a raise.

That's what they've been talking about on Finebaum. The only knock that he has on Les is his lack of QB recruiting and development. I think he has recruited QB's fine, but just like with Bama, they all aren't going to be great. Heck, we even went after Brandon Harris.

Jimbo might want to leave the tough ACC and go play teams much easier than Miami, Wake Forest, Syracuse, BC, & others. Easier to play Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Ole Miss, Georgia, A&M, and others in the SEC.

He just received a raise and contract extension a few months ago, so I doubt he gets more money.

Les Miles & the LSU offense.

Quote
On first-and-goal from the 1-yard line, Darrel Williams rushed up the gut for no gain.

On second down, Leonard Fournette rushed up the gut and fumbled as LSU lost 4 yards.

On third down, Williams ran again — this time for 2 yards.

On fourth down after a timeout, LSU ran a toss play to Fournette. Quarterback Brandon Harris’ pitch was off the mark. The ball hit Fournette near the shoulder pads, and it bounced on the ground 9 yards shy of the goal line — the final whimper from the Tigers’ suddenly struggling offense.

Four cracks from the 1-yard line. Four runs. Two fumbles. A loss of 8 yards.

In his presser, Les looked like a man who knows it's over but who can't say that because he still has a game to coach.

The silence of the LSU AD is shameful.  Either get rid of Les or come out and support him.  The fact that the AD is silent is as good an indication as anything that Les is a goner.

I agree with most of the comments adding that with his winning record and with all the coaching vacancies out there, some school is going to grab Les up quickly.

I could see Les getting the HC nod at most any of them except for the USCw job.

Yeah, he could end up at VT (I think Foster gets it), Miami, So. Carolina, or somewhere else as the coaching dominoes start to fall. For instance, if Memphis or Houston coach leaves, Les might go there. Les is 62 years old & might be happy to be an analyst on the SEC Network, ESPN, CBS, etc. He could work with Verne during games, that would be interesting.

I saw this story about it on Yahoo:

and it had this quote:

Quote
Miles has never had a season worse than 8-5, and has won 10 or more games seven times. But he has also lost three or more games four years in a row, including this season, and LSU's losing streak against rival Alabama – and former LSU coach Nick Saban – has now reached five games.

Did I miss memo that LSU is our rival now?  :lol2: :lol2:

All kidding aside, Les has issues, but the man has won over 100 games in 11 years. They must really be angry about our 5 game winning streak.

LSU has all the talent in the world, and is getting left behind.

Sure the 2011 BCSCG still gets under their "claw."   ;)

But after straght losses to Ole Miss and Arky, with better talent, they know they're getting left behind.

LSU has more players in the NFL than any other school. Fans are wondering why LSU is not doing better and more competitive for the SEC title & NC. I have to admit, that's a good question.

I dont't think they could keep him now even if they decide that's what they want.  They've essentially given a vote of no confidence this week.  I think we'll see a new coach in Red Stick next year.

... and it's too bad.  I've always thought Les was looney, but he teaches in a simplistic manner so players know the game and game plan.  Not a bad strategy.  Too complex and they are lost the first year or so.

Anyhow, his wit and colorful way of expressing himself will be missed.  Now LSU will likely join the ranks of HUNH idiocy.

Yeah, as intense as the Bama-LSU rivalry has been over the last decade, I've never really disliked LSU.  Miles is so goofy, so different from every other coach in the league, it's kind of hard not to like him.

And I think you're right about the HUNH.  I think they'll go for an offensive minded coach.

This could back fire on LSU. Les has been consistent for 11 years. He has fielded teams that are competitive in the very difficult SEC West. There are 4 other teams in the SEC West that need a new coach worst than LSU.

Miles is better than 75% when it comes to winning football games through his tenure.  If they fire him now they will be considered in the same light as Tenrsea when they fired Fat Phil.  The only difference?  Fat Phil won the SECCG the year before he got fired...
