Title: Texas Making Run for TCU Offensive Coordinator Post by: Marshal Dillon on December 05, 2015, 11:36:11 PM Looks like Strong is starting to figure things out.
Quote Bobby Burton of Horns247 is reporting that Charlie Strong and the administration at Texas are ready to make a "serious run" at TCU co-offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie. http://www.frogsowar.com/2015/12/5/9855678/report-texas-making-serious-run-at-sonny-cumbie Title: Re: Texas Making Run for TCU Offensive Coordinator Post by: Jamos on December 06, 2015, 06:43:16 AM I would think they would hire a decent head coach and let him find an OC. :dunno:

Charlie Strong may end up being the best coach ever at UT. BUT, I JUST DON'T SEE IT! Title: Re: Texas Making Run for TCU Offensive Coordinator Post by: Marshal Dillon on December 06, 2015, 09:08:25 AM I would think they would hire a decent head coach and let him find an OC. :dunno: I think he's still in learning mode, which is why I am dead set against hiring assistant coaches at a major program like Alabama, Texas, Georgia, etc. Too big of a job with huge expectations for an inexperienced head coach. The fact he demoted (fired) his OC after a few games shows a light finally lit up in his brain. He saved his job by beating Oklahoma & Baylor (with their WR/QB) but they still won. Now, can he recruit & can he really let the OC run the offense? :dunno: Title: Re: Texas Making Run for TCU Offensive Coordinator Post by: Catch Prothro on December 06, 2015, 09:43:57 AM I would think they would hire a decent head coach and let him find an OC. :dunno: I think he's still in learning mode, which is why I am dead set against hiring assistant coaches at a major program like Alabama, Texas, Georgia, etc. Too big of a job with huge expectations for an inexperienced head coach. He isn't a coach like Saban, whose Bama team was substantially improved year 1 to year 2. Or Haubaugh or McElwain, whose teams looked better in year 1. McElwain wouldn't have made the SECCG if he played the same QB all season that Bama faced. And although Texas had good recruiting numbers before Strong got there, it's hard to know if that talent had the character to make a cohesive team, as Strong thinned the herd his first season. Also, I seem to recall he was very thin in the trench players. Strong has been recruiting dual threat QBs, as that is what is coming out of Texas high schools. Apparently, he doesn't have an OC to implement that type of system. Hence, TCU's co-offensive coordinator. Forgot all about that, but still don't want an assistant as my new head coach. Thanks for pointing that out & reminding me of his other job. I will be interested to see how he does in 2016 because I think he is still struggling to lead Texas. I think it is a clash of personalities between Texas & Texans and Strong. Interesting situation.
