Title: Plenty of options on Tide defensive front
Post by: pmull on September 01, 2011, 08:03:05 AM
We’ve got lots of competition in the defensive line, where we have players returning but we’ve also lost some very good players over the last few years,” Alabama head coach Nick Saban said.

Saban will partially replace the loss of Marcell Dareus, Luther Davis and Kerry Murphy with a pair of junior college transfers – Jesse Williams and Quinton Dial. Williams, a 6-foot-4, 319-pounder from Brisbane, Australia, was among the nation’s top juco defensive line prospects at Western Arizona Community College. He is listed as a starter at defensive end and a co-second teamer at nose guard after impressing teammates in fall camp.

“I think he might be the strongest guy on the team right now,” center William Vlachos said. “He hadn’t played football that long and hadn’t probably played it in a 3-4 defense, with the responsibility you’ve got to have like our defense does. He’s worked hard and he’s willing to learn and pays attention.

The monster from down under is starting to make the headlines. Alabama has to put push the O-line back and collapse the pocket. Last year we were guilty of giving opposing QBs too much time.

Side note. Mountain Brook high school played a 3-4 last week. And so did those high school teams that ESPN showed last Saturday.

Most high schools run 3-4 defenses and spread offenses these days.

Only 2 days to go.  I bet Kuiyam is on an airplane somewhere right now.

We've got a REC meeting Sept. 8th, Cecil Hurt will be the guest speaker, I'm looking forward to hearing him talk about this team and their potential.

Mt. Brook had the players for a 3-4. Valley, not so much.
