Title: Alabama vs Auburn in Basketball Tonight
Post by: Marshal Dillon on January 19, 2016, 12:59:46 PM
The game is on the SEC Network @ 8 pm at the Barn. Auburn beat UK in their last game. Auburn has had several players injured so I don't know if they can maintain the same effort all season. We really need to win this game.

Auburn

8-8, 2-3 SEC
RPI  72
SOS 13

Based on those stats, I can only assume that their record must be due to a lack of defense.  :dunno:

Excellent observation. They have lost 4 games where opponent scored over 80, & 3 games where other team scored 75-79 points.

Hale looking good. He's back in shape it appears. Obasohan misses 1/2 FT's. 11-10 Tide.

Barn 7/13 on 3's. Coleman 0/3 on 3's, need to calm down. Tide still okay even with the Barn outburst. 40-37 Barn.

It won't bother me one bit if Canty keeps trying those half court 3 pointers.

With 2 or 3 fouls called every possession this game is likely to come down to hitting free throws and playing well off the bench when the starters foul out.

Barn 67-62. Tide will make one good play, then do a bad play. We can still win this one., but we have to be consistent.

Frustrating to see so many stupid fouls by Taylor & Norris. Taylor fouls out trying to block a shot past the 3 point line! What's he doing way out there?

Edwards fouls out. He has more fouls than points, plus his D has been poor all night. I guess Norris will foul out next.

I guess I just don't understand basketball.  The refs called 53 fouls in this game.  What constitutes a foul seems pretty much random to me.  Some things that are clearly fouls get overlooked, like Taylor grabbing hold of the rim.  Then other times a foul is called and you watch the replay and can't see anything wrong.  The ref standing 5 feet away from the play with a clear view of what is happening calls traveling on them, then several seconds later the ref on the other side of the court 30 feet away comes running over and overrules the traveling call with a foul call on us.  It looked to me like the guy walked before Norris touched him on the shoulder.  I just don't get it.

Of those 53 fouls, probably half of them were judgement calls that could have just as easily gone the other way.  So the end result is that games are largely decided based on judgement calls of the refs.  What is the point?  Why not just have a coin toss at mid court and then go home?

:dunno:

The word is out, put Bama on the line. The refs did Auburn a big favor last night by making the game a free throw shooting contest. I am amazed at how inconsistent the officiating is anymore and I blame it on the officials. We all know the rules of the game but the problem is the Refs never call two games alike. The rules don't change from game to game but the way the Refs blow their whistle sure does. I can't put all the blame on the Refs though, Bama needs to learn how to shoot free throws and the whistle may not have the affect on them as it does now. :dunno:

I can't understand how anyone on a basketball scholarship can't hit at least 75% of their free throws.  I have no basketball skills whatsoever, but at least I could do that.  :dunno:

I thought the officiating was horrible, but I think it was fair.  I don't like that last traveling call being overturned the way it was though.

I thought a huge turning point was when the near ref was overruled on the traveling call that was changed to the foul.  I think Bama was only down by four at the time and getting the ball with the first call.

 :eyeroll:

Bama missed 9 free throw while AU missed 12.  In my opinion the game was lost by the poor 3 point shooting.  Bama was 8 for 30 while AU was 11 for 30.

That's what I saw.  The Barn was hitting 3s from near mid-court.  Hard to defend those.

Time for some highly intellectual thought and analysis with:

THE GOOD

Tide scored 77 points, 11 points over their average of 66
Obasohan scored 27 points with 6 rebounds
Hale scored 13, 4 rebounds & is apparently back to 100% (I hope)
Points in the paint: Tide 30, Barn 22

THE BAD

Tide gave up 83 points
Rebounds: Tide 38  Barn 42
Tide 29 personal fouls
Tide 19/28 FT's  68%, Barn 28/40 70%  9 point difference
Tide 1-4 in SEC

AND THE UGLY

Bowers at 6'7" for Barn had 18 rebounds, more than Taylor, Hall, & Kessens COMBINED
Bowers 20 points, more than Taylor, Hall, & Kessens combined
Barn arena had 12th sellout in six years
Taylor, Kessens, & Edwards fouled out
Only 2 Tide players scored in double figures
