Call it fitting for a football program now at a clear and gloomy crossroads.

For Georgia, the budding optimism of the past few months vanished with Saturday night’s 35-21 defeat to fifth-ranked Boise State. On the heels of last year’s 6-7 record, the poor result has quickly refreshed questions about Mark Richt’s job security, which was to be expected, and sent new waves of criticism directly from discouraged fans to Bulldogs players, which maybe wasn’t so expected.

Multiple Georgia players entered practice this week with stories of negative messages from fans, sent in a variety of ways after Saturday night’s defeat.

“It’s hard not to get caught up in it when people are sending you messages every day and writing on your (Facebook) wall and people getting your phone number and texting you and stuff,” tight end Aron White said Tuesday. “It’s like, ‘I don’t know you, man. Who are you?’ … Hopefully, the fans will just let us focus this week and really just be behind us, because that’s what we need.”

They're asking for a lot but I can understand them trying to salvage a season. If they don't beat USCe, it will get very ugly in Athens.

They are a soft team. I don't see them winning against USCe.

I don't see them winning either.  But they are backed into a corner and desperate, so it will be interesting to see how they react.  Will they fight, or will they lay down?  Last year they laid down.

The players are trying to get respect the easy way which normally does not work. The easiest and fastest way to get respect is to work like crazy this week and beat the crap out of USCe this weekend. The USCe game may be Richt's last chance to save his job.

Fans leaving criticism on player's Facebook pages is uncalled for.

On Richt's page maybe.

I agree.  From the little bits of the game I saw the other night, I thought they were a much better team than they were last year at this point in the season.  They might have some fight in them this week.  USC better not come into this game expecting a cakewalk or they might get more than they bargained for.  Boise is a decent team, unlike Utah State.

Well Ga. is not the old team that had good people in all positions. CMR is a good Christian man but as a Coach he has to put his thumb down on them and I don't believe he does that. I don't think they win this week. RTR!

We need Richt to keep his job.  If he gets fired, we lose Kirby.

Thank you SC. I can say when CMR was at FSU they were one of the best offenses in the country. I just have the feeling that Head Coaching is wearing off for some reason. I don't see CMR at GA next year! RTR!

You might be right.  Although I have heard some people say that he sort of burned that bridge when he wouldn't leave UA to go there for more money to be the DC.  We'll see.  As desperate as they are I don't think he has burned any bridges.

Judging by the trap that Bama has sometimes fallen into in past coaching searches, you often look for a replacement coach who has strengths in the areas that your old coach had weaknesses in.  I'm not sure that Kirby's persona is different enough from Richt's to satisfy the fan base at his point.

I think they look for a proven head coach first. K. Smart will be their back up plan. Hiring a coordinator as a head coach can be risky.

I will stick my neck out and cite one factoid in GA's defense:  Heard on the telecast that BSU has 25 (I think that was the number) 5th year sr's.  Or as I like to put it: 25 potential 1st year pro players.  This is pretty significant.  Also thought BSU look sharper than I've seen them in past years, but I did not watch a great deal of the game.

The more I think about it, the more I think Georgia just might beat USC this week.  Boise is not a bad team, but East Carolina probably is mediocre at best.  I may change my pick by this weekend.  I think it will come down to whether they feel like they still have something to play for or if they just decide to give up in practice this week.

I think BSU is a good team but I did not think Georgia looked sharp. BSU stuffed their running game except for one big run. Murray did not look like the best QB in the SEC. In fact, he did not look good at all. I don't think CMR had them ready to play. I think you will see a different UGA team this week against USCe. UGA has their backs against a wall. If they lose to USCe the only SEC games they will win this year is Vandy, KY and the barn. That will not keep CMR's job.

I don't understand why Georgia didn't have more running back ready to play. I know they had injuries and players quit and all, you would think they would have still had some backs. Freshaman RB Crowell missed blocks in back field and let Murray get hit, one time caused an int.

Georgia was not only out-played Saturday but out-coached as well. I know their running back corp was decimated by injuries and disqualifications, but I was shocked that they kept in the freshman Crowell on passing situations. The poor kid had no clue on how to pick up a blitz. You can see it as a sign that Crowell is not ready for prime time, but I see it as pure bad coaching-not putting him in a situation where he has a chance for success.

If Ga can't stop Lattimore, it will be a very long night for them.
