Title: Tidesports Notebook: UA preparing for crowd noise Post by: pmull on September 07, 2011, 08:19:10 PM Playing in a noisy, hostile environment is nothing new to the University of Alabama. But playing in front of what may be the largest crowd to ever witness a Crimson Tide game, particularly with inexperienced quarterbacks, is a little different.
Penn State's Beaver Stadium has a capacity in excess of 110,000, and Alabama has been practicing this week with large speakers piping artificial crowd noise onto the practice field. Silent counts and hand signals are two crucial means of communication for a group of offensive players that can't hear each other. "We've done all that stuff and we're working hard at it. We certainly need to improve on it. The older guys that have done it before do it a lot better than some of the younger guys that haven't had to do it," said UA coach Nick Saban. "We're working on it, improving on it. We added some noise to practice today so that they had to do it. There absolutely was no way not to do it. The main reason I guess is because I worry that the QB's will be a little shell shocked by the crowd. If they think it gets the crowd fired up and helps their team they should do. It is just a gimmick. If we come out and blow them off the line and score early we will take the crowd out of the game regardless of what they are wearing.
