Title: Worried About Penn St?
Post by: crtuneman on September 09, 2011, 08:42:15 AM
Is it crazy that I am more than a little worried about the PSU game? I am beginning to wonder if Bama has more problems on O than we have admitted to ourselves. Aside from teh QB situation, I am hearing that coaches are not very happy with our OL and it seems like Saban especially is unhappy with them. If our OL cannot get their act together then we are in for a bad time in Happy Valley. It's a loud stadium, and their team will be very fired up about winning what could be Paterno's last game against Bama. Now I understand that Penn St is not a great team and they have lots of question marks as well. But I am not so much worried about Penn St beating us as much as I am worried about us beating ourselves. Our D will play great, and I think our special teams will be good, but will the offense be able to handle the pressure? Could someone talk me off the ledge?  :) I need to hear some happy words of encouragement that there is no way Bama can lose this game. Anyone?

As long as we dont have 5 turnovers we'll be fine.

Of course Bama could lose.   That is why they play the game.

We played the kent state one.  We will also play the georgia state game.  Not possible to lose either of those with our athletes.

How is this for a quote?  I was watching the Kent State game again last night.  One of the announcers quoted Kirby Smart as saying he thought "we may have the best defense that has ever played at Alabama".  I don't know if CKS actually said that, but if he did, WOW!  That is a huge statement, especially coming from the DC.  It is possible that CKS is right too, but we will see.

I was a little concerned after the game last weekend, but I am not any more.  This game will tell us a lot about our team though.

As to our O-Line, I was watching them closely last night.  I don't think it is a lack of talent, skills, or technique.  I think the problem was a lack of intensity, focus, and consistency in effort.  All of which I am certain were corrected this week with the proper motivation.  I won't name any names, but there was one guy on the O-Line that was flat run over on 1 play because he was loafing.  But a couple of plays later he made a great block on a D-Lineman and then slid on to the second level and took out a linebacker.  We ended up with about a 5 yard run on that play.  So they can play well, IMO, they just need to step up the intensity and do it on every play.  I think they will be much improved this week, but we'll see.

They are not going to drive the ball and score on our D.  It is that simple.  The only points they get will be from mistakes made by the O or possibly special teams.  And after the turnovers last week, I wouldn't want to be the guy who turns the ball over this week.  Look at what CNS says about Penn State and playing fundamentals, etc.  You know he has preached ball security all week.

No, I'm not even a little bit concerned.  Concerned for their safety perhaps, but not about losing the game.

I like to open with a tough team like Clemson, Va Tech a few years ago. We practice harder and come out ready to play that first game. Our players knew they could beat Kent State so the focus was not there. We did not play at a high level because we did not have to. I also think the coaching staff spent more time on this game in preseason practice than Kent State. An away game at Penn State should have everyone's attention. I think we play well this week.

You guys all make some good points. It's just that little voice inside my head that says, "oh no! We might lose to Penn St!" I try not to listen to the voices in my head, but lately they're getting louder. Is that anything to worry about?  :P

I for one am worried about every game you never know who will go down, or what will happen. crtuneman I think you have the right idea, if we worry maybe we are not flat. I can see as someone stated that we were flat last week maybe we won't be this week. I am curious to see if CK plays LT  this week. RTR!

Yeah, I would probably be more concerned about the voices in your head than the Penn State game.  :D

I'm worried about the kicking game, the running game, the passing game, and probably should be worried about the D.

Oh yeah, I'm worried about the weather too.  A fumble could change the game.   :popcorn2: :popcorn2: :popcorn2:

List for PSU game:

1. You should always worry.
2. The way our OL played last Sat, you should doubly worry.  I don't care what the reason was, i.e. lack of intensity or whatever.  Fact is, they haven't shown they can play well.
3.  We don't have an established QB.  Every new QB has to establish themselves.  That may happen but it has not happened yet.
4.  Very hostile environment.  Very...

If you're on the ledge, try to hold on to the window. Praying is always a good thing too...

As to the worry, fear is NOT part of the process gentlemen.  :D

Guys, we could LOSE this game, and still go on to be national champions.  Especially if the weather is horrible.  The critical games start with Arkansas.  Save your worrying until then.

If we lose this game, Boise goes to the NC.  Yes, I'm stepping onto the ledge.   :o
