Quote
McElwain, who thought the hit on Del Rio was dirty, reportedly was yelling at the North Texas sideline after the third-quarter play and had to be restrained by UF players.

Wow!

Watching that video loop it doesn't look to me like there was any intention to injure Del Rio.  It almost looks like he might have stumbled somewhat as he was going in for a legal "blind-side" hit... Hate that Del Rio was injured regardless...

I thought the same.  But you can't go in low anymore.  Maybe that was it.
Hey, that's what you get when you schedule a patsy.

CJMc should be yelling at the UF guy who missed the block.

It's both a NCAA AND a NFL rule.

Read here: http://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/news/new-rule-protect-passers-low-hits

"The rule specifically covers a scenario in which a quarterback is in a passing posture with one or both feet on the ground. In that situation, no defensive player rushing unabated can hit him forcibly at or below the knee."

It's a pretty recent change.

But in the case of Del Rio the defensive player was NOT rushing unabated.  He was trying to get around the LT.  He seems to have slipped or maybe his feet hit each other.  Regardless, he was falling as indicated by his left knee hitting the ground before he hit Del Rio.  This was a totally unintentional accident that should not have been flagged.

I've already agreed with you.
But the announcer, referee, and McElwain thought it was a penalty.  Maybe the refs are trying to enforce it liberally to protect the QB as often as possible.

Have the announcer, referee and McElwain call me and I'll explain it to them...  ;)  One would think that with as much as they all get paid they would be better able to understand it without my help but hey, I don't mind really...
