LSU's defense shut down Bama for 3 Quarters last night.  It was almost like they knew what play Bama was going to run.

Great Film Study? 

Coach O in Kiffin's head?

LSU could read our signals?

What I noticed:

When Jalen Hurts looked to the sideline for the play call (after the team lined up), LSU immediately changed defense.  I have not seen another defense do that against Bama.  And they always checked into the right defense, especially the first three quarters.

Either LSU coaches had studied enough film to know what play Bama would check into against certain defensive alignments, or they could read the play being signaled in.  They also seemed to know what reads Hurts would make, whether he would keep the ball or hand it off. 

I think Bama/Kiffin needs to study this game closely.  Maybe this far into the season Bama's offense has developed propensities, and those propensities can be predicted by the defense.  Against a one-dimensional offense like LSU, it only took one score for Bama to win.  But it might be another story against teams with more dynamic offenses.  Especially going forward in the season, or (should Bama make the playoffs) against teams with clever coaches (like Meyer or Harbaugh) who have plenty of time to study game film.

Hmmm, very interesting.  Wouldn't be surprised if they knew our signals.
BUT, looks like LSU switched defenses before Kiffin even made the call -- at least during the first quarter.

If anybody can steal our signals it'll be Gus.  He has a history of doing that.  Remember what the FSU players said in the NC game about the Barn D knowing what plays they were going to run.

But again, I thought our play calling last night was too plain.  Plain Lane.  Needs to be more unpredictable.

Excellent observations. I think they saw some sort of trends, plus we were our usual conservative self in the 1st quarter & beyond. Their defense is fast and solid so some of this was expected. I hops hs coach saw the game and reads this thread & makes comments.

 ???I kind of thought in most of our games in the 1st half this year our offense has been too predictable. Like CLK was wearing down the defense and setting it up for the gotcha moment.

We run the ball very good. Last night our RB's were being hit before they could get to their read points at the LOS. lsu was rested and ready, and as you said it was as if they knew we would run cause we can not throw the football well at all. We hit short stuff and they was ready. If Hurts could hit downfield throws at least 40 to 50% then our Offense would score like Michigan every week and yes I know we play a different caliber teams. Our QB has got to connect downfield more to open up some running better. JMO. RTR!

I think it was just gameplanning and elite athletes on LSU's defense. They knew what Kiffin likes to do and what were determined to stop it. They also knew Hurts can't throw the ball with any kind of accuracy beyond 10 yards, so they were committed to stopping the run and daring him to throw deep. Give them credit, they had a great defensive game plan and executed it well.

Good news: we won't face another defense as talented and tough as LSU this year.
Bad news: LSU provided future opponents with a blueprint for containing Hurts.

I think our coaching staff look forward to a challenging and competitive game like we had last night. I know I enjoyed the knock down, drag out brawl and it was 1 for the memories!!!Roll Tide!

Indeed, it was an excellent game.  Contrary to predictions, WE dominated, not LSU.  LSU had just 25 yards of offense in the 2nd half.

Our offense might have seemed predictable, because LSU's defense was well prepared.  We actually had quite a few new wrinkles on offense.  We hadn't thrown to (freshman) Forristall this year until his 22-yard catch down the sidelines.  And the trick play, Ardarius to Jalen, didn't work but was tried.  A new inside screen didn't work, but we hadn't seen that one.  Fortunately we didn't waste time trying to run jet sweeps against their speedy defense.

Best news was we escaped without any further major injuries.  That's unusual in such a tough game.

Kudos to the LSU defense.  They could do better than playing for the Cajuns!!   :lol2:

Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news but will see a defense as good or better than lsu. I think it will be auburn and for sure Michigan. They may be Yankees but that coach up there has got them playing mighty good defense. They don't have to outscore people because people can't score on them. I have a feeling tosu and coach Meyer will be hobbling down the street when that one is over. RTR!

You guys are right about the downfield pass.  Hurts also mostly throws towards the sidelines;  he is still learning how to read the middle of the field.
