Title: Alabama to hire Arizona AD Greg Byrne as Bill Battle plans to step down

Alabama will reportedly hire away one of the most highly regarded athletic directors in the nation with Arizona's Greg Byrne agreeing to replace Bill Battle in leading the Crimson Tide.

Battle has decided to retire from his post as Alabama AD immediately and move into a newly created "special assistant to the president" role, either until his contract ends in March or longer. Greg Hansen of the Arizona Daily Star reported late Sunday that Byrne will leave Arizona to take the Alabama job "as soon as Monday."

According to SportsBusiness Journal's Michael Smith, Alabama began interviews for the AD job in December, and Byrne met with Saban on Saturday with administration getting a "thumbs up" from the football coach.

Byrne was the AD at Miss State before moving to Arizona. He hired Dan Mullen to replace Sylvester Croom. He also hired Rick Rod at Arizona.

The first thing I thought of was his health. This makes me feel better.

He said his "health was not a factor in this decision" and that he is "in full remission" at this time.

Well MD on this one I have to say I think even I know the why part about CNS. We hired him to run the department not somebody to run him. So the get along part has to be the new guy fit CNS standard not the other way around. RTR!

Remember what happened when Stallings wanted them to hire Mal but they hired Bob Bockrath instead?  That sent us into the abyss until CNS arrived a decade later.

The AD is not his boss, University President is. You really think anyone will try to "run" Nick Saban?

I don't know what the pecking order is between CNS and the AD.  Mal was AD when he fired Shula and hired CNS so that tells me the AD is in charge.  But maybe something has been written into CNS contract that is pertinent to hiring a new AD.

In any case, if I were Byrne, I wouldn't accept the job without having a conversation with CNS.  I would want CNS to know that the relationship has to work and tell him how I envision that.  And I'd want to know mano-a-mano if CNS has any problem with anything I said.  Mutual respect and commitment to the same goals.

I'd probably want to talk with CAJ too.  Just smart to have these meetings.

I'm glad CBB is healthy and sad to see him leave.  He is a Bama guy and knows what matters.  We are in his debt for a lot but especially for hiring CAJ.

I look forward to the Ad first press conference and see what his goals are or where he would like to see us go. RTR!

I think when Saban was hired it was announced that the President was his supervisor, not Mal Moore. Saban wanted that.

I hope he pushes for a new basketball arena. What are some other needs in the area of sports?

Most facilities have been upgraded. We need to constantly be renovating and staying ahead of the competition. 20 years ago Auburn had one of the nicest football and baseball facilities in the league. They have done nothing to keep them up to date and now they are below average SEC venues.

New basketball arena has been at the top of my list for a while. Coleman is too big. It looks empty even when there's a decent crowd. We need a smaller arena that's more straight up and down.

I still like the idea of an arena with 14,000-16,000 seats. Maybe, 12,500 at the smallest.

Coleman had a $22M renovation in 2009. It is better but that was not money well spent IMO. Lipstick on a pig. We need a basketball facility and not a multi-purpose facility that was so popular at the time Coleman was built. I never have understood why it was built as a rectangle rather than an oval.

I think we need a 12,500 seat arena at a minimum. If the team starts playing at an NCAA bid level the fans will come. Do not forget gymnastics. They pack the 15,000 seat facility on most nights.

Does the basketball arena have it's own BB center, like Florida has & like our football team has?
