Title: Three Overpaid SEC Football Coaches
Post by: Marshal Dillon on April 16, 2017, 11:47:30 PM
Good article.

Quote
With the success of the SEC Network and repeated bowl berths in the double digits, there’s no shortage of money in the Southeastern Conference. One college football columnist thinks three schools aren’t getting what their money’s worth when it comes to paying the head coach.

David Kenyon of Bleacher Report recently named the six most overpaid FBS coaches, excluding first- and second-year coaches, and half of his list hails from the SEC:

Bret Bielema, Arkansas
Kliff Kingsbury, Texas Tech
Mark Stoops, Kentucky
Butch Jones, Tennessee
Steve Addazio, Boston College
Kirk Ferentz, Iowa

No doubt Bielema is vastly overpaid and Jones could be in his last year at UT. Stoops at UK deserves his money for coaching at such a dead zone.

I suspect that Jones Is done after this year, and possibly Bielema too depending on the willingness of the Arky folks to live with mediocrity.

Tennessee is not going to become a contender with Jones.  He's recruited well, and then done nothing on the field with the talent. Maybe they'll pull an Auburn and surprise everyone in a year where they're not getting any preseason hype, but I don't see it.

Neither is Arkansas going to become a winner under Bielema. Its a difficult place for anyone to win though, and I don't know the mood of the fans and administration there. They might be willing to settle for 7-9 win seasons with the occasional major upset.

The Arkansas fans are a strange lot. They call Finebaum expressing their love for Bielema on a regular basis. Some even say winning 8 games is a good year. His record in 4 years there is 25-26 & 10-22 in the SEC. Like I said, they're a different kind of fan.

We're a football school. They are a track & field school.

I wouldn't put Stoops at UK on that list. He did fair for UK, and i mean if you live in Kentucky or the surrounding area and your a good player, are you going to Louisville, Ohio st, or UK....come-on.

Now BB at Arky yeah that is a joke. My wife is from Arkansas so when we go home some of her family are big Arky fans. but they are not die hard like Bama fans (but who is) they get upset more at their QB than the coach. I will tell you this and i have said it since they hired BB. You are not going to beat Saban by playing Saban ball. BB and Miles at LSU tried to out Saban Saban....aint going to happen...ever.

Now if you get a Spread O with a Dynamic QB, you got a shot. (Clemson, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Utah)

I think one of the best Coaches in the league that don't get enough credit is Mcelwain. He has done a great job with poor players at UF.

And to state the obvious...Malzohne at the barn is in way over his head and has somehow managed to keep his job. He better get to 8 wins this year or he may be out.

Well when you run through those big cotton fields and rice patties all day you'll be fast on your feet. So yes T&F will fit right in. RTR!

Malzahn better win 10 games and beat either Bama or UGA or both. The natives are restless.

Agree on both counts.

If you beat 4 lower-tier SEC schools plus Louisville, and make a bowl game, you're exceeding expectations at KY.

Florida will be dangerous if/when Coach Mac finds a QB.  Cupboard was left pretty bare by the former coaching staff.

Where is the UT game this year?

I know ole Butch Jones is going to throw the sink at us to try and save his butt. UT fans are awful quite this year, I like it better when they think they have something (like last year).

I kind of want Jones to stay, the last thing we need is for Tenn to finally hit on one of their coaching choices.
Ole Payton might give it a go..just kidding.

The game is in T-Town this year. Last time at BDS, UT gave us all we could handle. I don't look for that this year. Hurts has their number.
