All of the things that have been printed about the Ole Miss case seems unreal as to what Bama went through in the Albert Means case that Bama got busted. Now, Lewis at Miss State, makes it sound so easy for these players to do this stuff with no worry about any repercussions and you can add his mother in there as well.
I worry about any player we recruit from Mississippi as well as any players from any other State that Ole Miss or Miss State is after because it looks like money is or has been part of their recruiting. They may be re-thinking that with Ole Miss. Of course, the NCAA isn't the organization it used to be, either, so it's going to be interesting to see how all this ends up.

If Ole Miss doesn't get the death penalty for something like 17-21 major violations, then no one will ever get it. In the ESPN 30 for 30 on SMU named "The Pony Express" the media they interviewed said the NCAA would most likely never give the death penalty again. SMU has never fully recovered and it has been 30 years. The NCAA also quit giving teams no TV games as punishment. I believe Auburn in the early 90's was the last TV ban. That hurt the opposing team and conference revenues. They seem to have settled on serious recruiting restrictions, reduced scholarships and bowl bans which I think is bad enough. They also give coaches "show cause" which means they are almost unhireable. The only "show cause" coach I know of to be hired is Bruce Pearl at Auburn. And even that won't alter the memories of the fans as to what happened on the field.
One way of really punishing schools would be to fine them. Even if a school is banned from a bowl, another school from the conf will take its place and the banned school will share in the conf bowl payout $$$. Take away the shared bowl $$$ from the offending school and you would begin to get the attention of the AD and the school Pres. |
