Amazing stuff, thanks for posting.

On another note.  Boston.com is a great place to surf and look at pictures any time, not just of recent tragedies.

Unbelievable pictures.  Yet there is no looting, no complaining as people stand in long lines for water, stores are REDUCING prices of goods and vendors are giving away items in vending machines.  What a measure of the strength of the people of Japan.  I fear our own country would not come close to measuring up.  I am truly amazed at these people.

Incredible images.  And yet very difficult to look at.  Like knowing a train wreck is about to happen, you shouldn't look.  But you do.

Kupkake, great post.  An obvious:   #+

Ever heard of a little event called "Hurricane Katrina?"  We (people of NO) DIDN'T measure up...

Those images are unbelievable and a reminder of just how fragile life can be.  They make me thankful for my health, family and home.  God bless Japan!

It is hard to imagine what they are going through. Japan needs to be in all our prayers.

uuuhh ... I just had a thought , I know , it's rare for that  to happen  :-\ but ....

can one of those tsunamis hit in the Gulf of Mexico ? anyone know ?

I don't see any reason why they couldn't, although it is pretty unlikely.  There are fault lines around the Caribbean if I'm not mistaken.  All it takes is a well placed earthquake somewhere around the gulf to trigger it.

I really like the "unlikely" part  ;D  thanks !
where I live my crap would probably end up in Huntsville if one hits  :o

just what I need , more weather crap to worry about ,
hurricanes , tornadoes , storm surge and if poncho villa shakes add a tsunami

RICKY !   RICKY !

Of course I'm just guessing.  But it seems like a remote possibility to me.  ssmith would probably know for sure.

What was the question?  Tsunami in the gulf of mexico?  Highly unlikely.  There are no major rift boundaries down there to cause the kind of movement we have seen in Japan and Sumatra.

There is a rift boundary on the northern border of Puerto Rico that produced that ring on islands down there, but I am not aware of any major tsunamis ever in the gulf.

Anything can happen, but the most likely cause of tsunami in the gulf would be from a meteor.

I'll do a little research later and confirm.

Found a couple of scare articles about collapsing oil reservoirs and under water landslides..

Underwater landslides off the continental shelf are possible and can cause tsunami's but this is a bit of stretch, the drop off in the gulf is more gradual than most shelf's and these under water slide tsunamis typically occur when a volcano collapses, not some normal sediment settling.

The methane bubble or collapsing oil reservoir tsunami is ridiculous and not worth discussing.

If you're worried about tsunami's there is only one thing you need to know.  When the oceans go way way out, you need to start running the other way and climb high.  Dont stand there and watch.

More pictures on MSNBC, look for the 'Images of Damage, Relief and Recovery' link.  There is one picture I was looking for that was on there the other day.  It was a luxury yaght perched on top of a two story house.  I mean it was a BIG boat!

Yeah, we had a small quake down here about two weeks ago, around 5:30pm on a Friday.  I never felt it, was a 3.5.  The epicenter was out in the gulf, about 70 miles or further south of Fort Morgan.  We also had one last year I think that was in the gulf, west of Tampa that was a slide event.  Not sure if the most recent one was a slide, but suspect it was.

Hey general, if in the unlikely event of a tsunami in the gulf, of course depending on trajectory, how much damage do you think Mobile could possibly sustain?

Aren't methane bubbles one of the theories sourrounding the Burmuda Triangle?

Off subject, I know, but ssmith's answer made me think of it.

I've heard that as well.  Seems like I saw a TV show about it once where they made a pretty good case for it.  For boats, the methane in the water makes the water less dense, which causes the boat to sink.  They did something similar in a swimming pool with air bubbles and were able to sink some model boats pretty easily.  For airplanes, the theory was that once the methane reached the surface of the water it would continue to rise into the air.  An airplane would come along and fly through the bubble, which was highly explosive.  If the airplane caused a spark while it was in the methane it would explode.

It is by far the most plausible explanation I've heard for the Bermuda Triangle phenomenon.
