Title: small town life and it's challenges...
Post by: Allie on March 14, 2011, 05:31:01 PM
warning:  I'm venting....

My mom called and told me she isn't cooking supper tonight..  Yes- I'm spoiled.  She usually cooks supper for us.  I polled the kids to see what they wanted.
One said "I don't care" and the other said "Where are you going to get it?"
(shows how rarely I cook anymore)

We decided on hamburgers.
I went to THE store (there's only one grocery store in town) and discovered they have no hamburger meat. No ground beef or chuck..  The cashier asked me to watch the register for her (one register) while she checked the cooler...  None there...
Her reply was "the truck runs tomorrow.'  That helps, - NOT.

Oh well- supper will be 1) frozen pizza 2) homemade soup from the freezer 3) breakfast or 4) Jack's.  (the only fast food place within 10 miles)
I'm leaning toward Jack's and having someone coming thru bring it to us.

For the record I did cook last night... real food.  Porkchops, green beans, garlic and chive potatoes, cornbread and pistachio salad.

While cooking last night I did destroy the lid to one of my new pots by sitting it on the eye and accidently turning the wrong eye on then not noticing it til it was a wee bit hot...  putting it under cold water wasn't the thing to do. The glass shattered.  Guess we'll see how good the warranty from Biltmore is.  The set was close to $500 and the warranty says they'll replace it no matter what happens to it..  Hope that includes "blonde moments."   ???

Get deep freezer and stock up.  ;)

Get deep freezer and stock up.  ;)

That's where the soup and pizza are coming from...
I have veggies in there but they're for real cooking...
I was shooting for easy and kid friendly.

We're now discussing homemade buscuits, bacon, sausage, eggs and grits..
There goes the quick/easy I was looking forward to.

Breakfast for dinner is awesome, always a hit with the kiddies.

Especially on cool rainy nights..

But, since they have kitchen duty they decided on Jack's.
I WILL be making a trip to a real grocery store tomorrow.

Wow. You have a Jack's? Try 1:15 to the closest Big Mac, Pizza, DQ, etc. The two country stores we have close at 7PM so you can't even buy gas until morning.

We don't have a Jack's but the town 10 miles away does..  lol.
We can get pizza from the Texaco.  :-(
Walmart- about 30 miles away.
McDonald's - a little past Walmart.

We can get gas until 9pm or 10pm on weekends from the Texaco but the grocery store is locked up at 8. (unless you call them and tell them youre on the way and to please wait for you)

An advantage is that the pharmacist will meet you at midnight if you call him at home and tell him you've just left the ER with a sick child so you don't have to drive an hour to a pharmacy that stays open all night.

The police don't need 911 addresses to know where you live.

My spot in church is safe until at least 10 minutes after services start before someone sits there just in case I come in late.

When the lawnmower broke my neighbor cut grass and bushhogged the field.

I could prolly 'borrow' ground beef for supper if I called a friend or two.

If my kids get in trouble at school or the youngest doesn't turn in his homework his teacher texts me.

my wife refuses me to be in her kitchen , sorry ... but it's because I did what you did (it was a stupid lid anyway)
forgiveness on damaging the cooking utensils is few and far between  :-[
and that was 15 years ago  :o

they need to make these dumb stoves more user friendly !
they got one light ... a red one
it don't tell you which burner is on just that it's on
I vote for a red light for each individual burner

and why do they put the sink so close to the stove
the first thing your going to do if there's a little problem is chunk it in the sink and turn the water on

I think we were set up !

More than half of the "wrong numbers" that call our home, we either know the caller or the person they were errantly trying to reach.

E-Cred is a reputation system that is displayed next to your avatar and name.  Anyone can give you +1 E-Cred by clicking the Applaud link.  They can also take away 1 point by clicking the Boo link.

If you see someone reply with the number sign (#) that is short hand for I gave you +1 E-Cred.  We also have a smiley now that means the same thing:

#+

We have one for boo too, but people don't always use it for that.  In fact it is very rare for someone to get a real E-Cred boo in here.  Here is the Boo smiley though:

Indeed.  We are hoping to avoid that aspect of TS.  I think most of the trouble makers from TS ended up going somewhere else.

I know all about smalltown life. We have one caution light already and now they are talking about putting up another one. I told them they are going to to big city. Start adding growth like that and they will have rampant crime. RTR!

Yeah, once a caution light goes in, it's just a matter of time.

Ha!  We have a red light..  at 6pm they turn it off and it becomes a caution light.  Does that make me a city girl?

I've lived in a city environment most of my life and it seems the city planners all are crack smokers when it comes to traffic lights. They are rarely in sync, even on the busiest of streets, causing traffic snarls at peak times. It encourages rampant crime. :pullhair:

Once the Dollar General comes in, it's only a matter of time.  You might get a Subway first though.

Funny, I think we all did.   That and rice.  Ate rice for three straight days and thought my scanner eye got a little slant to it.  I had to stop.

We do have a salon here but the owner/operator/master cutter always looks like she just woke up.  I won't let someone do my hair if theirs doesn't look so good.

Kind of reminds me of how in every smalltown you would see a 'Small engine repair/Tax service' shop.  I always thought if you had a nack at one, you would be a natual at the udder.
