Title: need help!
Post by: bama87 on September 30, 2011, 03:22:13 PM
I have strained my achilles pretty bad. Been to the Doc and have some anti-inflams. What can I do in the near term to get this better. I know I won't be running for awhile, but I do have to work. Yes I have crutches.

Soak in Hot Water and Salt. It'll take soreness out and rest it as much as possible. Some 20 mins. on and 3 hrs. off with ice might help. RTR!

Didn't the doctor give you any direction about soaking in cold/ice vs hot water?  Pills only??

First, change doctors.  You need to know about hands-on treatments.  I'm not a doctor (of people), but I know that ice baths are used for that to reduce swelling (not just pills - ugh) and heat is applied afterwards to reduce pain.  It's a tendon, so you aren't going to help by stretching it, at least not right now.  Tendons take a long time to heal (unlike muscles, tendons have little blood flow to help them heal).

thanks> I have to shoot high school football tonight. This will be a good challenge. One team sucks really bad so I won't be there long. Standing in 1 place is ok.

R=rest
I=ice
C=compression support (ace bandage)
E=elevation
all after prayer of course. Achilles tendonitis is very difficult to heal so be faithful to the RICE plan and good luck. ROLL TIDE!

If all else fails, rub a little dirt on it. :D

This is correct advice. And stay off it ad well.

By chance.....have you taken cipro or levaquin in the last 3-4 months? Both are antibiotics in the quinolone family known to cause tendonitis, especially achilles tendonitis.

Bill, mailed it on here twice. Both with the RICE and the antibiotics. The RICE or at least the "I" fromm RICE (ice) is good for the 1st 24 hours. Cool for 24 then mild heat. After that, I highly recommend a good sports medicine  Doc, at Physical Therapist, or even a Chiropractor who deals with sports injuries.
 As far as applying heat, get or make a rice sock. Basically take a (clean) tube sock, and fill it about 75% of the way with plain white uncooked rice. Tie the end of the sock in a very tight not ( or you'll be picking up rice grains for days).Stick it in the microwave (dry) for around 30 seconds.  ( caution your microwave cooking times may vary). When the rice gets warm, lay the sock down on a foot stool, or the end of the couch and rest the injured area on top of it. You are not trying to cook the rice just heat it up.

Here this may explain it better, with pics!

Overall I agree, but heat may not be applicable. Also, did you see an orthopedic doctor or a family practice physician? There's a huge difference. Let me check with my wife tomorrow, she's a physician and a darn good one. At least, that's what her patients and peers tell me.

Thanks for all the advice. I made it through football tonight. I have instructions from doc about warm heat. It will be propped up all day while I watch some football. It doesn't hurt when I lie down. I will be ready tomorrow night.

Both you and CJ are on the bench for the Florida game.  Don't overdo it.  Returning to the TV too soon may aggravate the tendon; pace yourself.  We have plenty of football pundits on this forum as your backups, so quit trying to carry the load yourself.  Maybe you should watch just the first half of the game, and perhaps fill half of a sock with rice.  Hope this helps.  (http://www.observatorycentral.com/style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

Revisited doc this am. Now on crutches. I have some hydrocodone. I am officially out for today's game. I will be in my recliner with ice and heat tonight for the game. I hope we beat them good so I have little stress.
