Education officials say scores of immigrant families have withdrawn their children from classes or kept them home this week, afraid that sending the kids to school would draw attention from authorities. There are no precise statewide numbers. But several districts with large immigrant enrollments — from small towns to large urban districts — reported a sudden exodus of children of Hispanic parents, some of whom told officials they planned to leave the state to avoid trouble with the law, which requires schools to check students' immigration status. The solution will be as complex as the problem, unfortunately.
Everyone wants there to be a solution that will not hurt anyone and will please everyone. That's just not possible. I'd take the ones that were already here and do as follows: 1) perform background checks to make sure there are no Chesters in the bunch 2) REQUIRE them to learn English 3) issue them ss#'s to curb all the illegal employment 4) if they serve two years in any of the armed services, they become citizens |
