Title: Florida's Brantley has "high-ankle sprain" (cough, cough) according to coaches
Post by: Chechem on October 03, 2011, 06:59:52 AM
http://www.alligatorarmy.com/2011/10/2/2465052/john-brantley-not-expected-to-play-florida-vs-lsu

Nobody is convinced by the report that Brantley is questionable against LSU with a high-ankle sprain.  If that's the problem, he has the lowest threshold for pain among Div 1A players.

Somebody with a view of the ice bag please tell us if it's on his knee or ankle.  The Florida media is mum - like it'll help to keep it quiet.

I looked at the replay and the trainers were working on his foot/ankle area. If he has a severe ankle sprain that kinda of thing takes 6 weeks or longer to get better. His right foot is his plant foot for throwing so I don't know how effective he would be. I guess he could have it wrapped real tight and have some pain medication and be able to play.

 ???

I wish the young man the best...hopefully he will be back with the team soon...

Thanks.  I didn't see where the trainers were poking.  Lots of speculation on the Florida sites.

Even with him available, they won't come close to beating LSU unless he has a miracle cure.  Preacher?

I watched the replay last night. It looked like a knee when they played it back in slow motion but they were working on his foot/ankle. I had a severe sprain when I was a kid. I thought it was broke. I was on crutches for a week before I could even put pressure on it. I am sure some cases are worse than others but his looked pretty bad.

Could be worse.  I'm glad it isn't a knee.

High ankle sprains can be quite severe and linger for some time.  Andrew Zow missed half a season with one it seems like.

I agree. My prayer before games is nobody gets hurt. Injury just, to me, takes away from life and we don't want that. We would have won that game with him or without him. RTR!

How much pain killer are they allowed to give an athlete nowadays for pain? Let's say his ankle is severely sprained, are they allowed to totally numb it? That seems dangerous to me because then you can do more damage to the ankle since you're not feeling any pain. The great linebacker Dick Butkus had his career ended early because of such nonsense. He had injured his knee but the Bears just shot him full of dope and he kept playing with an injured knee which he basically destroyed without even knowing it, until the medication wore off. He had to retire but he sued the Bears for medical negligence and incompetence and won. He played 9 years and had to retire when he was 30.

EXACTLY!! That was my first thought when I read Chech's post and I looked at the replay. I think we all thought for sure he had torn his knee up. Still, a high ankle sprain is not easy to play with if it's bad. Like I said, it will depend on how bad a sprain it is.

John Brantley has been seen on campus with a boot on his right foot. The injury is to his ankle. I've heard the injury is not that severe.

That is good news.  If I were them, I would let him sit out against LSU.  They could break him too, especially if he is a tad slow because of the ankle.  They need him back to full speed by the time they play Auburn.

:D

This isn't the same boot that TR was wearing last year (per TS forum)?  That became the brunt of a joke for months.

That is good news. At the time of injury, I thought he may be out for the rest of the season.

Did anyone see the freshman's expression on his face when Brantley went down?

Looked like he was talking to himself. Only can guess about what.

Freshman QB got dinged up some.

I will be surprised if he plays agasint LSU. I think they hold him out but that poor freshman QB is in for the beating of his life. I expect a lot of holding calls against the Gators in that game.

Good point.  I just hope Florida makes a good showing, or we might lose some luster on our victory.  On the other hand, if LSU crushes Florida (and I expect it to be 30 points or more), maybe LSU will think they can cruise against us.

Before anyone flames me, I admit my predictions suck.  Just skip the trashing of my history and give us your prediction (score UF vs LSU).

I think LSU wins big at home, but I also think people will realize that they are a much different team without their starting QB so it doesn't really diminish what Bama did at UF.

Upshaw had a high ankle sprain and was not himself for about 6 weeks. He played on it.

I think UF keeps it close in the 1st half but LSU goes away in the 2nd half because of Fla being young and not much depth. We know what depth did for us. RTR!

LOL!! No joke. Has a true freshman QB EVER been placed in a worst situation, facing a ferocious defense with a week of preparation and at their stadium? This could be a very ugly situation.

Hmmm.... I seem to recall one in 2009 that had to come in on the first series with NO preparation and all the marbles at stake.
