Title: Kicking Game Post by: carl childers on January 08, 2019, 03:20:42 PM Well, last night wasn't fun. I am not shocked that Clemson won, but I am shocked at the severity of the loss. No need to panic - it happens even to the best teams. Clemson was ready, and Bama was not. I am disappointed in the last few games with the lack of execution, discipline and coaching. I usually don't fuss about coaching, but last night was not good in that area. I think many if not almost all mistakes can be corrected. Bama is not going anywhere.
My main concern is the kicking game. For a top notch program, there is absolutely no excuse for the kicking game to be as putrid as it is. I used to just laugh it off and say, Oh well, can't have everything, but it's not that it is average - it is dysfunctional at best. For a top ranked team to miss 9 extra points - repeat, 9 extra points - is crazy. High school teams don't miss that many extra points. Not to mention the lack of depth on KOs, kicking KOs out of bounds multiple times, etc. This has to be fixed now. Bama is paying folks hundreds of thousands of dollars to coach special teams. However, the extra points being missed don't upset me nearly as much as the field goal tries. Maybe it is 1 point vs. 3 points, not sure. Just fix it! And say what you will but our kicking game didn't cause us to lose to Clemson so I think it is a bit unfair to Bulovas to come down on him real hard. Our defense didn't stop their offense. Our offense let Clemson's defense stop us. For some stupid reason someone thought trying a fake field goal might actually work (see Kirby Smart) but it doesn't. I guess my thoughts are that if we score enough TD's then it won't really matter if we get the extra point...as long as we stop the other team from scoring TD's... :dunno:

One thing we need for sure is somebody who can punt and flip the field. Then kickoffs out of bounds is absolutely ridiculous.
