Chicago - President Obama’s job approval rating has fallen below 50 percent among registered voters in Illinois. As he seeks re-election in 2012, it’s a sign of potential trouble in the state where he launched his political career, won a series of landslide victories and still maintains a home.

The President would win handily in head-to-head matchups against all the leading Republican candidates. But he’s falling 10 to 12 percentage points short of his 2008 performance, when Mr. Obama crushed Republican John McCain in Illinois, 62 to 37 percent .

If the 2012 election were held now, registered voters in Illinois would favor Mr. Obama, giving him 50 percent vs. former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s 35 percent. Other match-ups look similar: Obama 52 percent  vs. Texas Gov. Rick Perry's 30 percent; Obama 53 percent vs. businessman Herman Cain at 30 percent; and Obama 53 percent vs. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at 34 percent
