His 14 wins tied Jackie Sherrill and Mullen for most by a 2nd year coach. However, he took over a program from Mullen that was in very good shape. It was obvious the program was declining. Beating Ole Miss saved his job a month ago. Off the field discipline issues were a problem and a recent on the field fight knocked their starting QB out of the bowl game. I think that and the bowl game loss was too much to overlook and they let him out.
Billy Napier reportedly turned the job down and signed a two year extension at LA-Lafayette. I would not count him out yet. He still has a game to play on Monday. The problem is that they're Mississippi State and they're not going to attract a big name coach, and any coach that has success is going to jump to a bigger program when the opportunity arrives. Joe Moorhead was the best they could after all the success and talent Mullen left behind? Who's coming now that will be any better?

Even tougher now with Kiff at OM. But MSU can be a bowl eligible team in most years. The next coach has to recruit guys of higher character than what they have now.
