Title: Cal v. Oregon in the Game Thread Post by: Catch Prothro on October 06, 2011, 10:07:11 PM I'm sitting here watching Cal. @ Oregon on ESPN, and it's halftime and Cal is leading 15 to 14. I have to say, Oregon is just not that impressive. They are the PAC12's Florida, and I think Florida, with Brantley healthy, could beat them. Oregon is not a physical team; they rely on speed, quick play calling, and misdirection. Florida is a more physical team than Oregon, and also has more speed. Oregon's QB is not too accurate, especially under pressure. Oregon has scored by handing the ball to L. James on a sweep and getting big yards by sealing the edge. They might have looked better against LSU, I cannot remember now.
What I do think is that LSU's "big wins" against Oregon and WV do not seem all that impressive now. Even though LSU looked solid in those games, they had a decisive edge physically. That's to be expected in a non-conference game, especially for a team like LSU or Bama. The only physical, SEC type teams LSU has played this season is Miss State, and LSU did not dominate that game. 19 to 6. 19 to 6. I think that is a more accurate measure of LSU's ability than its domination of non-conference foes. And by that measure, I think Florida (with Brantey) would have given LSU all they could handle. Without Brantley playing, LSU will not have to worry about keeping up with the scoring, because Florida probably won't be doing too much of that, so LSU will pound the ball all night against a defensive line already exposed by Bama. But I still don't see this as a three score victory for LSU. I think they pound it and pound it and win by with defense and by wearing down the Florida defensive line, in a typical Les Miles play it close to the vest unless you have to do otherwise victory. Prediction, LSU wins 24 to 10. Title: Re: Cal v. Oregon in the Game Thread Post by: SUPERCOACH on October 06, 2011, 10:20:04 PM Oregon just scored to take the lead again.
I agree with LSU not being as impressive now that we are 5 weeks into the season and we've had a chance to see some more games. Alabama, on the other hand, has become more impressive each week IMO.
