Post by: Kupkake on March 15, 2011, 05:04:51 PM Come cut the hundreds of privet bushes growing in our neighbor's field along our walking path is the best help! No she can't do it and she doesn't even walk on the path.
While chain saws are good for cutting trees they don't work well on smaller, more limber branches - keep jumping of track. Don't recommend hand loppers. Anyone with a bad neck and messed up rotator cup (as in hubbie) can't do that without extreme pain. Maybe the best bet is to just send us a dozen young, able workers! Title: Re: I hate chain saws! When starting, hold in right hand with trigger depressed. Pull once with indicator in the choke position. It'll "cough". Then flip indicator to start and pull the cord again. So easy even GMac can do it.Title: Re: I hate chain saws! I used to keep mine that loose, but the guy at stihl said you just want to be able to pull it separate from the bar and it needs to still turn easily. Either way, I havent thrown a chain since I first started working with a chainsaw. Nor are they difficult to start if you know how to work the choke. Even my ryobi POS starts. Title: Re: I hate chain saws! Post by: KoKoPuf on March 16, 2011, 11:54:31 AM I've tried all the starting tricks. The choke is either on or off - no in between. And I try to keep the chain tight. The problem with the jumping chain seems to be caused by small limbs. I'm cutting some privet that is threatening to take over North Alabama and it is a pain in the a**! I don't have a problem with the chain jumping off when cutting larger trees. A cordless Sawzall might work great, maybe a good excuse to buy one. The hedgetrimmer won't work on the larger privet, some of the trunks are 4".
Title: Re: I hate chain saws! Post by: BAMAWV on March 16, 2011, 12:05:25 PM I did not know removing the whole bush was an option. Put a chain around the trunks and "snatch" the whole thing out of the ground. Or use the chain saw for thick limbs and hedge trimmers for small stuff.

Post by: Jamos on March 17, 2011, 08:47:29 PM If your chain is jumping off, your chain is definitly way too loose as mentioned earlier. Better read those how to start intructions real good if it's a fairly new saw, if it's an old saw I would take it to the shop, this Ethanol is causing a lot of problems for the small cycle engines. I always mix Stabil in the gas for everything that I have that uses gasoline.

I took the saw, fairly new one, home and read the instructions on how to start it. On the third pull it fired but did not start, I pushed the choke in half way and pulled and it started.
I immediatly called him and did not say hello when he answered, justed reved the saw up a few times for him to hear it, I won't write the names that he called me. I didn't keep his saw but I have been having a good time teasing him. The problem that I had with my saw was the carb needed some repair. Title: Re: I hate chain saws! I was reading that you should always use those little single use two-cycle oil containers, that way you always get exactly 50:1. I bought a few of them and it's certainly easier, more expensive, but no measuring and even better no super rich fuel (I tend to err on the safe side). Title: Re: I hate chain saws!
