LETTER: UA disrespected Florida in Gainesville

Dear Editor: I was at the Alabama versus University of Florida game on Saturday, Oct. 1. I believe that the band from the University of Alabama owes the fans of UF an apology. I also believe that the University of Alabama band owes their fans an apology for poorly representing the Alabama fans. In all of the contests I have attended, the fans of Alabama have been polite and respectful of the opposing teams fans. I respect them for representing their University and alma mater with pride and integrity.

At the third quarter break, UF fans have a tradition of singing “We are the Boys of Old Florida.” The Alabama band began playing a loud and brassy song during this tradition. This was disrespectful of the tradition and reflects poorly on the band and University. That was a very unfortunate choice by the band

director/drum major.

MBD always plays Green Day's Basket Case to start the 4th quarter. Screw a bunch of whining gators. Their team plays like little girls.

Basket Case - Beginning in the mid 1997 the Million Dollar Band began playing the Green Day song "Basket Case" in the break between the 3rd and 4th quarters. This continued until mid way through the 2006 season, when the Marketing Department decided to play "Sweet Home Alabama" over the PA system instead. The MDB continued to play the song, just at different points of the game.[5] "Sweet Home Alabama" was still played during 2007 up to the Houston game. Since that game the MDB has played "Basketcase" during the 4th quarter break once again

Plus, “We are the Boys of Old Florida"??  I find the song racist.

What about Tebow leading the Florida fans in a Rammer Jammer after they beat us that year. That's the song that Bama fans sing most and we think it is very disrespectful for any other team to sing it. Payback can be very tough to swallow somtimes.  ;)

Jill needs to get a life. My goodness, so the bands were playing at the same time. Do you need some cheese to go with that whine?

Unless she requested ahead of time for them not to play during that period, I don't understand her beef.  Obviously she didn't know about the MDB's tradition between quarters either.

Because FLorida got their butt tanned for the third time in a row with the Bama belt.     8)

Fairly accurate assessment, I'd imagine.  We may never have seen a complaint had Florida upset the Tide.

Bama's football team was also disrespectful.  They didn't allow Florida to run the ball, and they even injured Florida's QB!   :'(

Were there even any UF fans left between the 3rd and 4th quarter?

I would like to thank Jill for the wonderful letter. Unfortunately, I cannot. Forcible rape on your team must have been a horrible thing to endure. It's a wonder you haven't mentally blocked the entire day.

My internet has been out in addition to a bunch of personal stuff.  For example, my Grandma is in surgery right now, she is 95 and has dementia and broke her leg.  I dont even know what to hope for, ya know?

Hope everything works out for the best for your grandmother and the entire family.  I'm not wise enough to know what that is, but I think there's someone who does.
