Title: I got a big scare last night Post by: Jamos on October 15, 2011, 09:44:01 AM My grandson was playing on his high schools kick off team last night and a defender hit him with a crack-back block wich flipped him high in the air. He went high in the air and landed head first. He was transported to the hospital and I was there pretty late but the test came back negative on the scan. He has some pain in his right knee and was still had a headache whenb they released him at the hospital. He will have further tests this coming week.
I was amazed at the people that came to the hospital to check on his status after the game. The referee that saw the play and threw the penalty flag came to the hospital as well and told us that he saw him come down awkward on the play. He said he had to follow the play until it ended but kept looking back at him with concern. We all take a lot for granted as we watch these young men play the sport, as most of us played football, but as we wish for someone to really hit the opposing player hard, you never know what the consequences might be after the play is over. After my grandson gets over his soreness though, he will be right back out there trying to make another tackle and he wouldn't have it any other way. Title: Re: I got a big scare last night Post by: BAMAWV on October 15, 2011, 09:55:20 AM Great story? I don't really know how to respond other than it sounds like everything turned out alright. I'm not a fan of these guys that hope others get hurt-- even if you say "not career ending or anything". The object of Bama's "D" hitting as hard as they do is not to put a guy in the hospital-- but to make them remember, on the next play, what is gonna happen.

Title: Re: I got a big scare last night Post by: cbbama99 on October 15, 2011, 10:23:59 AM Wow, I can't imagine what that must have been like to have to watch that happen, Jamos. Glad to hear he is OK.
Title: Re: I got a big scare last night Post by: SUPERCOACH on October 15, 2011, 10:40:13 AM I am glad he is going to be OK Jamos.
I struggle with whether or not I am going to let my son even play. I love the game, but I have a new perspective now. I was never concerned for my own safety when I played, but it is different now. Right now I am leaning toward holding him out until high school and then letting him decide for himself. The problem with that is that he will be way behind the other guys on basic fundamental techniques if he doesn't play at all until then. I still am not sure what the best approach is. He is only 4 right now. He can't even play pee wee for a couple more years, so I have time to think about it Title: Re: I got a big scare last night Post by: cbbama99 on October 15, 2011, 10:43:57 AM I am glad he is going to be OK Jamos. We have let him try t-ball and (this was NOT my decision) soccer and he seemed to show little interest in either. I probably will let he try pee wee when he gets big enough, and if he likes it, I will let him continue as long as he wants. Of course, we fathers will never stop worrying about them out on the field. Title: Re: I got a big scare last night Post by: BAMAWV on October 15, 2011, 10:50:03 AM You're the parents and what you say goes, but it's probably the boy's decision. Age old struggle of how you'll feel if somnething goes bad and you could have stopped it, but did not. If it was up to parents, we wouldn't be able to field a military.
:Prayer: Title: Re: I got a big scare last night Post by: SUPERCOACH on October 15, 2011, 10:52:29 AM My son is playing soccer right now too. In fact I am the coach for both of the teams that my kids play on. Some of our boys soccer games get pretty rough. I thought there was going to be a fist fight the other night between some of them. I am watching him close to see how he does when some of those kids start pushing and grabbing him, or even just innocently bumping into him and knocking him down.

I am watching him close to see how he does when some of those kids start pushing and grabbing him, or even just innocently bumping into him and knocking him down. At least they were doing something. My son stood in the middle of the field all last fall and watched a mob of other kids chasing the ball. I don't think soccer is going to be his calling in life. :P Title: Re: I got a big scare last night Post by: SUPERCOACH on October 15, 2011, 10:57:52 AM You're the parents and what you say goes, but it's probably the boy's decision. That I don't know. I might let him try pee wee. He definitely wants to play. I told you I struggled with this. :D Title: Re: I got a big scare last night Post by: CrimsonCrusader on October 15, 2011, 11:04:21 AM Hope everything i sgood.
Title: Re: I got a big scare last night Post by: Jamos on October 15, 2011, 11:23:01 AM Thanks to all of you for your thoughts and prayers. It is much different sitting and watching the contact versus when I played. I will be curious to see how my grandson reacts to this, his main sport is soccer and he has a chance to earn a scholarship in it, Furman and North Carolina has talked to him already.

I just got in from an appt. and saw this. I'm very glad he is ok. I'll bet you were worried to death. I was until I got down to him on the field and saw finally him moving his legs, he was immobile there for a little bit. They put a brace on his knee until he sees the doctor tomorrow and he said he still has a headache, hoping the headache goes away soon. Title: Re: I got a big scare last night Post by: Jamos on October 16, 2011, 08:46:41 PM Jamos, can you give us an update on your grandson? Hope all's well. Yes I talked with him just a short while ago. His knee is better but he's still have some headaches. He's been laying around but he went to church today hoping that moving around some will get the stiffness out of his neck and shoulder area as well as his knee. He said he had some swelling on the outside of his knee but he has been icing it and the swelling is much better now. His mother is taking him to a Dr in the morning and I think it is the knee Dr. He's hoping as each day goes by the headaches will decrease but his mother is keeping an eye on that as far as the severity of the headaches. If he has headaches in the morning I'm sure his mother will take him to his GP for a checkup and referral if necessary. Thanks to all of you for your concerns and prayers, it has meant a lot to all of us. Title: Re: I got a big scare last night Post by: Jamos on October 18, 2011, 08:13:46 PM Some of you have asked for an update on my grandson. He is here at our house tonight and we've had a chance to sit and talk some. The headaches are the main thing with him right now, his knee is feeling much better though. They have an appointment with the Dr. Thursday morning if he is still having the headache problem.
The coaches are keeping a close eye on him as well as his teachers in the classrooms. It seems that time might be the best dose of medicine for him right now, I think a lot of it is a mental thing with him and sometimes you don't get over that as quick as you would like. He did hear about the young man dying from a big collision in a game last week and that shook him up some. He says he's ready to get back on the field and that's what I would expect to hear from him, he loves his sports. All of you have been great and thanks again for all of your thoughts, kind words, and prayers. :D Title: Re: I got a big scare last night Post by: 2Stater on October 18, 2011, 08:18:51 PM Still praying for him, J. Title: Re: I got a big scare last night Post by: Chechem on October 18, 2011, 08:23:52 PM Thanks for the update. I'm sure the physician gave instructions, but (just in case) no aspirin for a concussion, right? Increased risk of bleeding.
I know, I know, we're all parents. Title: Re: I got a big scare last night Post by: BAMAWV on October 18, 2011, 08:26:29 PM It's good for everyone to watch for any change. Y'all are probably giving him the headaches fussing over him. He'll be OK and you'll be worrying about something else he's doing by next week. The woman says to watch his appetite. RTR Jamos.

We finally got all of the testing on him done and the MRI showed no signs of any disc problems in the neck area. The Dr said that he had gotten a pretty good concussion and that was the reason for his headaches. He warned my grandson about concussion injuries and future problems fron concussions and released him. My grandson and I talked and he said he only had one year of high school left and he really loves football and wanted to play some more. We talked about the his injury and the consequences but he said he can't go through life in fear, what could I say as long as he knows.
