Title: Is this a problem on Bama's D?
Post by: SeniorTSM on October 18, 2011, 06:47:40 AM
Ok, first let me say this is the Best D I have seen since 92 by far.

Now if you look the last couple of teams have decided that if they can get the ball off and throw a deep route they can have some success. UF did it for 6, Vandy did it but no score, and Ole Miss did it for 6.

Is this a speed problem on the DB's? Is it that they are caught looking in the backfield?
looking at Tenn, they did the Same thing early to LSU and it worked but then went back to the same play back to back and got picked off.
I don't think we are worried about Tenn but LSU and QB Lee throws very well deep.
Thoughts?

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice (or thrice) shame on me. I don't see it happening again. My guess is they beat that horse to death in practice.

What has really happened is that the safetys have been caught looking in the backfield and have not gotten back in time to cover. If you watch each of those long passes, they happened on play-action for the most part and the corners let the wr get a little separation because they thought they had help over the top. The other problem is that the cb did not get a good bump on the wr at the los. I don't think it's a problem because 1) the cbs and safetys will only let that happen one time and 2) it's a very low percentage play that doesn't have a lot of success against a great defense like Bama's. You notice that it only happens one time and then never again. Bama is good enough to shut that down when they have their heads in the game.

Lee is best known for completing passes to our DBs.

How well does he throw from his butt?

Great analysis.

I'm not very good at this so please bear with me. I've been watching our "D" get off to a slow start. I started reading, paying attention to things like "surviving the script" and remarks by hsc on the secondary getting beat confused assignments, and also some comments of our guys getting beat because they are just sitting back and watching in order to figure out what the "O" is running.

But maybe the reason we are getting beat on the opening series isn't the backfield, but the pass rush or pressure. Is it posssible that while trying to not over rush the plays on the opening drive, the defensive front is giving the QB way too much time. It seems the first few games they only took advantage of it by throwing underneath and getting 10-15 a clip. But now (the last 2 games) the "O's" have started trying to hit the home runs, using the extra QB time to try and go over the top. CNS will put a stop to that nonsense against the Viles.
