Title: Missouri speeds up path to SEC East
Post by: pmull on October 22, 2011, 07:49:42 AM
Missouri moved into the fast lane Friday to join the SEC East when its governing body unanimously authorized Chancellor Brady Deaton to potentially move the school out of the Big 12 and negotiate with other conferences.

Missouri will have at least the necessary nine presidential votes to be admitted into the SEC provided there are no legal or financial entanglements for the SEC and Missouri plays in the Eastern division, two sources familiar with the SEC's discussions told The Birmingham News. That would settle concerns by Alabama and Tennessee that they could lose their annual rivalry game.

Look for Missouri to soon apply to the SEC. Deaton became the first Missouri official to attach his name to the letters "S-E-C" when he said Friday, "We've provided information to the SEC, and we've asked for information from the SEC to inform us in regard to our future decision making."

Missouri would match up better in the Easy East, with games against Kentucky and Vandy soon to become rivalries.

Put them in the east for now, then move them to the west when we get two teams that are really in the east.  They may never play a game as an eastern team.

I know none us (including me) want to see Bama move to the East, but one possibility would have Missouri go to the west, move Vandy to the west, and have Tide and barn in east. Then you have Who, Ole Miss, MSU, Arky, Vandy, TAMU, and Mizzou in west; Bama, barn, Fla, UGA, UT, KY, and USCe in the East. That would preserve both the UT and barn games. Again, not the situation I would necessarily want, but it is an option.

MO is a pretty good fit in the East. Good basketball program and border with KY sets up a really good natural rivalry. Plus Columbia is closer to Athens, GA than to Baton Rouge; closer to Knoxville than Tuscaloosa; closer to Vandy & Ky than MSU & Auburn.

Why can't we move the barn to Conference USA and stay in the west? :dunno:
