TUSCALOOSA - A bye week before a huge game means numbers can be crunched until one is numb when crunch time finally arrives. Unless you're Nick Saban.

"I probably don't do as much numbers crunching as a lot of people," said the fifth-year coach of second-ranked Alabama.

"We look at the technical aspects," Saban said. "For instance, I might look at who gets the ball on third down ... and what position is he in on third down? That may not make that guy the leading receiver, but it means he's the go-to guy in certain instances and certain formations and certain situations.

Very good comparison.  It appears that Bama has LSU beat in many categories, although the teams are close.  The two areas where LSU has Bama beat are the kicking/field position game and turnover margin.  Bama has LSU beat on penalties.  So, the game might come down to turnovers (or lack thereof) and field position.  If Bama can avoid turning over the ball, and do a decent job in the kicking game (still giving up a few yards), and LSU gets its penalties, then statistically Bama wins!

Right.  I think their penalties will offset the 5 or so yards per punt.

If only there were penalties for laying on the grass, or eating it.

Since he is one of their main blitzers, I just want to see Bama burn them where Honey Bonger bitzes from.
