BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- The stats for Alabama's defense are absurd. In today's pass-happy, quick-scoring world of college football, no one in their right mind can expect to hold teams to 6.9 points, 180.5 total yards and 44.9 rushing yards per game.

This, of course, leads to a favorite pastime of Alabama fans, who even before seasons start ask if their latest defense will be the school's best ever. Expand your focus a little more, Tide fans.

Because if Alabama keeps this up, the debate will be where the 2011 edition ranks among the game's greatest all-time defenses.

"I think they're on the verge of being looked at as one of the greatest defenses in Alabama history, which means one of the greatest in college football history," ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit said. "But they're just one game away from it getting out of hand and it's all down the drain."
