Title: Men's Basketball to Host Oakland Monday Evening
Post by: pmull on November 14, 2011, 08:57:50 AM
The No. 19/17 University of Alabama men’s basketball team continues its season opening homestand on Monday evening when it hosts Oakland at Coleman Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Crimson Tide opened the 2011-12 season with a 64-44 win over North Florida on Friday as the Tide’s defense held UNF to 23.2 percent shooting. That defense will be counted upon again versus an extremely talented Oakland squad.

“Oakland is a very good basketball team,” UA head coach Anthony Grant said. “When you look at the guys they have returning, they’ve got one of the elite point guards in the country in [Reggie] Hamilton and a two-guard that’s one of the elite three-point shooters in the country in [Travis] Bader. They’ve got multiple guys that are extremely dangerous from the three-point line.”

Engstrom is gonna sit around, eatin' oranges, again this year. White boyz are worthless.

Eblen had an assist in 8 minutes of play. His "D" better have been tenacious.

Releford off to a slow start. It is only one, insignificant game. He finished (SEC tourney and NIT) strong. 7 pts. in 26 minutes--3 assists.

Levi Randolph--5 points and 8 rebounds, 33 minutes (CAG ran his legs off-- RTR). rivals.com ranked Randolph as the eighth best shooting guard and 30th best player overall

Nick Jacobs-- this is significant-- only 4 pts. and 5 rebounds with 2 blocked shots. But the 6' 8" fresh had only 15 minutes. We could use him to rest Green and Mitchell. Rivals.com ranked him as the No . 10 forward in his class and 85th overall.

Moussa Gueye (ACL tear--out indefinitely) and Engstrom  (white guy) are the 7 footers we need, but don't count on either. 6' 8" is as good as it gets.

Spotted tendency:
The Tide is 1-0 against teams shooting < 40%.

We will need Engstrom this year to help with front line depth. He is supposed to be improved from last year. Freshman Jacobs will see a lot of playing time.

I'm not worried about Randolph and Lacey. They need a little time and get a few games under their belt and we will see what all the recruiting services saw in them. The other freshman Cooper is out playing them both so far.

In the UAH exhibition game with a pretty good UAH team Cooper had 8 pts, 7 reb, 2 blocks, 1 steal with 29 minutes played.

The youngsters have been stretched in the first two games. Bama has seen two good zone defenses so far and CAG has pushed them in working the ball and trying to get inside of the zone. It takes a lot of patience to beat a good zone defense. The zones has changed the number of shots they are taking as well.

Engstrom has improved, he had a blocked shot in the last game as well as he's learning if he can't get the rebound to try and keep it alive. His worst problem so far has been the whistle happy refs calling chincy fouls on him and I mean quick ones too. He is really playing hard so I think by the time SEC play starts he will give the team some valuable minutes. He doesn't run the floor like a typical 7 footer, he really hustles from the offensive end to the defensive end of the court. It's too bad the other 7 footer is hurt, both of them could learn a lot from scrimmaging against each other.

Don't get down on the team, they are playing with lights out intensity on both ends of the court and have come away from the first two games learning a lot about themselves. I'll be there tonight cheering them on. RTR!!!!!  >:(

This is the one I am using:  http://tunein.com/tuner/?StationId=30587&

It is not a good one though.  Every 30 minutes it plays a news report on top of the game at the same time.

The freshmen are getting better. Randolph has 29 min, 9 pts and 2 assists. cooper has 30 minutes, 6 points and 7 rebounds. Lacy has 20 min and 10 points. We play Maryland next. These kids need to grow up fast.

Good win for the Tide.

We go to San Juan, PR next to play Maryland on Thursday. We play either Colorado or Wichita State on friday. We need to win this tournament. The non-conference big games killed us last year.

Good talent-- not only ACC school but heavy recruiting out of the DC area. This is as big as Purdue game was last year.

I think this was a quality win. Oakland had a good team last year and much of that talent returned. If they keep on improving every game, they will do fine. The Maryland game will definitely be a stiff test and we'll find out more about our team.

Big win for the Tide tonight and I think that one word can sum it up for them, pressure. Oakland came here to win this game but Bama's pressure never ceased the whole game and it took Oakland right out of their game plan.

The big difference in this Bama team this year is the quality of the players coming off the bench, with most of them being a freshman. I don't think I have ever seen this many freshmen playing and getting quality minutes, there were four freshmen on the floor at one time during the second half.
