I prefer fried. Yeah, I know, not the healthiest way to cook a turkey, but the flavor with the "Creole butter" injection is 2nd to none. Love me some fried turkey. (Really brings out the tryptophan for a good nap, too)

Overall a good injection marinated fried turkey is my favorite too.  Over the last few years I've fried several, smoked a couple, and now this year I've decided to go with ease and do a traditional roasting.  I will brine it for 24 hours beforehand and put some aromatics in the cavity while roasting for extra flavor.  It's Alton Brown's recipe...hopefully it will be good.

The tryptophan nap is a myth. More tryptophan in chicken. Lot of work putting T'Giving together, extra large potions, maybe a little wine and it's is naptime. This per history channel last night. Good holiday though.

You have to roast one with the fried one in order to get the drippings for gravy. HTH

Anyone have a good giblet gravy recipe?  That was never a staple in my house growing up.  My Mom is getting up there (70 in January) so I've been handling the turkey the last few years to take some burden off her.  I'd like to add some gravy to the menu this year.

As soon as I can get the women's attention I'll get one. But on second thought I'll bet she says gravy making is seat of the pants flying.

I prefer the roast turkey. Maybe it's just the whole presentation with the stuffing/dressing, golden skin, gravy & all but I just think it tastes better.

Doc, Williams-Sonoma has a turkey gravy base that is really, really good. Highly recommend you give it a try.

I just went on-line because the Williams Sonoma stores typically sell out of the turkey gravy base long before Thanksgiving.  According to the web, the gravy is only available on the internet.  Now the good news - it's been reduced from $10.95 for 18 oz to $4.99.  I ordered 2 and with shipping it's still only $16.10.  It won't be here in time for Thanksgiving but it is good to use all year long.  

I have no idea how to make good giblet gravy.  My dad was the gravy cook at our house and since he just made it up as he went I have never been able to duplicate it. :(

I do a combination of way, wouldn't let me pick two, so I had to have a sammich vote.

17 pound bird, injected with cajun butter, onions in cavity and under skin, in roasting pan covered with foil, in oven at 500 degrees for 1 hr 15 minutes, shut off oven and leave overnight(do not open door).  The bird slow cooks and this insures the bird is very moist.  Then carve bird up, put in roating pan with juices, and put in the smoker below the ham for a couple of hours.  Killer, simply killer!   :P

That really does sound like a great idea. I fried mine this morning with the afore mentioned Creole butter injection marinade. Simply awesome!  :P
I'm a hero maybe 4 times a year with my family; twice with my homemade chili; twice with my fried turkeys on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Jamos, our buddy from Louisville came down and ate Thanksgiving dinner with us today. He said the turkey was the best he ever had. He said also to wish you a happy Thanksgiving.

I have, numerous times. He spends all his spare time on the golf course. I just reminded him of the cold winters that he has to go through, living in Louisville, and that he needs to get on here since he can't play golf in the snow. Lol!
