Title: Plasma or LED
Post by: N.AL-Tider on November 24, 2011, 10:13:35 PM
I'm looking to get a new, larger tv for our den.  I am looking at getting a 40-50" tv but am not sure what exactly I want.  Course, that depends on cost too...  Anyways, I've heard a lot of good about the Sony and Samsung tvs as being toward the top-of-the-line brands and I'm ok with that.  What I don't know is whether I should go for the plasma or LED models.  Whatdayasay?

The plasma may have a slightly better picture in theory, but there is supposedly very little difference between the 2 with the newer LEDs.  I would probably get the LED, especially if it is cheaper.

Plasma is an energy hog. LED is your best bet.

I have both and they are equally great.

I have both but my favorite of the two is a 5 year old Panasonic 50" plasma. I just think it has a better picture and their is no lag when watching sports. I think probably the new LED's have just about as good a picture as the new plasmas but plasmas are a good bit cheaper. As far as energy ratings I noticed at Costco last week the LED was $22 a year and the plasma was $26 so not much difference. Plasma sets are a good bit heavier and, at least when I bought mine, you couldn't lay them flat for transporting.  Bottom line - both are really good and you will enjoy it.

Nalt -  I don't know about plasma and LED things, but I do know about 40" or 50" screens.  Hubby bought the 50" and now thinks he needs a 70" one!  Doesn't matter that a 70" is way to big for the room.  So just suck it in, go with the 50" and tell Kimberly to be grateful you haven't asked for a 70" one! ;)

I would love to have either. Beggars can't be choosey, lol. Everybody I know and all I sneak a peak at in Wal-Mart they both are great pics. I would probably choose on price. RTR!

LED is by far the best IMO. If price is a concern you may want to consider a LCD. They have come way down in price and the picture is better than plasma IMO.

I struggled between Sony and Samsung when I bought my big screen TV and I have been very happy that I went with Samsung.

I believe that Sony and Samsung had a joint venture somewhere and built the factory together to make these flat panel TVs.  I think they are both made at the same factory, and a lot of the differences are cosmetic.
