GADSDEN, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say three kayakers emerged unharmed after plunging over the 90-foot Noccalula Falls in Etowah County.

WBRC-TV reports that the kayakers went over the falls intentionally and filmed the ordeal as part of a documentary they are producing.

Gadsden Parks and Recreation Director Kerry Payne said Monday’s incident has led officials to re-evaluate city ordinances and even considering future arrests.

Payne said authorities will call police if they see people trying to go over the falls. Payne said the kayakers could have been severely injured or killed.

Just a little northeast of Gadsden. We ride hogs up there every spring. Go to Fort Payne direction off of I-59 towards Little River Canyon away from Collinsville. Collinsville was always famous or the original flea market of Alabama. Trade for livestock, goats, pigs, cattle, chickens and everything else.

Little River Canyon is only place in Alabama that you can snow ski at. They have snow making equipment, a lift and small resort cabins to rent. Very beautiful.

The Little River feeds down into Lake Weiss, into Cherokee County. Just north of there is Mentone Alabama and Valley Head. Lake Weiss is the best crappie fishing lake in Alabama. The other direction of river goes back towards Gadsden.

Centre Alabama in Cherokee County is where singer songwrite is Randy Newman is from:

"Newman has been nominated for twenty Academy Awards, winning twice. He has also won three Emmys, five Grammy Awards, and the Governor's Award from the Recording Academy. Newman was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002. In 2007, Newman was inducted as a Disney Legend."

His songs "Short People" and "Birmingham" were famous in the 1970s.

Weatherman James Spann always tells the coldest temperatures in Alabama are from Mentone and Valley Head in the winter months.

Anyway if you go to Little River Canyon and follow the river back to Gadsden you will come to Noccalula Falls just northeast of Gadsden.

The road is a series of twist and turns up and down the mountain ridge. Great for motorcycle cruising.

My sister and bro-in-law bought a cabin over in Mentone a few years back.  Never been over there...may have to take them up on their free weekend offer and go see the place.

Glad they made it :o

As a student at what was then called Gadsden St.Jr.College,this was our popular hangout. We simply navigated the trail to the bottom like everyone else. Got completely under the falls and hung out with our pony millers for hours, lol. Huge opening there to hang out that you usually cannot see.  I have not been there since about 1985,not to the trail anyhow but heard it was long closed for safety issues. Wonder how many pony millers it took for those folks to decide to go over

LOL--You figure a dozen or two, but you'd be pretty much sobered up by the end of that ride!
