Quote
I saw where Jackson High School beat Oneonta High School last night for the 4A State Championship.

It took me back in time 31 years to a game at Legion Field between Notre Dame and Alabama!

Alabama lost the game in 1980 to Notre Dame (7-0). It was a slugfest just like last month's loss to LSU.

A hard hitting, ferocious defensive football imaginable! Late in the game, Alabama stopped Notre Dame inside their own 5 yard line after a first and goal.

Alabama’s offense came out and fumbled the ball right back to Notre Dame. It took them 2 tries but Notre Dame scored a touchdown.

Quarterback Don Jacobs was Alabama’s wishbone quarterback. He took the blame for the fumble and loss on himself.

Now fast forward 31 years in time.

Former Alabama quarterback Don Jacobs is now Oneonta’s Redskins High School Coach.

Oneonta High School (12-3) lost last night to Jackson High School (15-0).42 –28 in the 4A State Championship in Bryant Denny Stadium.

Now the rest of the story.

Coach Jacobs lost a daughter in 2004 in a car wreck and another child last December.  I just cannot imagine losing a child, much less two.

He was on the TV talking about how he and his wife get thru it.

He said that after the loss to Notre Dame in 1980 he wanted to feel sorry for himself and remain in the adversity of possibly costing Alabama a 3rd straight National Championship.

Coach Bryant would not let him. Bryant made him pull his boot straps up and get on with his life. No self pity.

Coach Don Jacobs is thankful for the leadership and lessons learned from Coach Bryant 30 years ago.

He and his wife stay busy surrounded by the Oneonta high school players and their deep faith in church and a very supportive school system.

Coach Jacobs said his great church and school system has gotten him and his wife thru the toughest years imaginable.

Oneonta’s Redskins lost a tough ballgame last night on the football field but they have winners in the “clubhouse of life” in Coach Don Jacobs and his wife!

Now you know the rest of the story!

Roll Tide!
