Title: Thank you, Houston, and thank you, USM. We'll send flowers.

The Southern Miss crushing of undefeated Houston opened the door for Alabama in the BCS and doomed poor Okie State.  It made people stop admiring speedy, fast-paced play and consider defense.

[if these absolutes bother you, have a drink first]

Houston runs one of those wide-open offenses that are popular among western teams now.  Scores are high, action is fast, and one hardly has time to admire the product of the high-school milk programs on that redhead cheerleader; "Oops, another player crossed the goal line."

But on Saturday the redhead was being gawked with regularity.  Houston was losing, and Southern Miss kept the ball.  It was methodical, it was old-school, and it wasn't close.  Houston was beaten.

BTW, USM had the best uniforms.

By game's end, through Red's tears, one could conclude that even the most successful up-tempo styles fail against a good defense.  USM had won easily.

It was then, at that moment, that the neurons began to click.  If lowly USM could knock off mighty Houston, perhaps Okie State is vulnerable vis-à-vis a strong defense.  We know that Defense wins championships, but shouldn't one D per BCSNC be enough?  Even Red could now imagine an LSU slaughter over Okie State.

Back at their keyboards, the grubby writers were doing their typing, clicking off type about the blowout of Okie State over Okie.  But with each puff of cigarette, the image of an SEC defense slamming an OSU QB (sensu Colt McCoy) came to light.  And the writers began to see the score slipping down from 56-52 to 42-35 to 35-10 or maybe 35-0 LSU.  :o

Yes, Houston did Alabama a good one.  Houston's offense folded up like a peppered dove, and fell from among the elite teams.  The final insults?  OSU took Houston's BCS Bowl, and Alabama stole the championship opportunity from their western buddies.  "Don't give up, Houston.  Red's available this weekend."

"Thanks, Houston. Roll Tide."

My son and I had one of those fish on a trotline Saturday night and the nylon cord broke!

That one guy says we are going to score touch downs instead of kick field goals this time.

Maybe they were just holding it in, quiet, reserved celebration for the Tide.  ;)
