Title: South Carolina Self-Imposes Sanctions for Major Vioaltions
Post by: Marshal Dillon on December 14, 2011, 07:44:02 PM
Are you kidding me? Three major violations and they think a loss of a few scholarships will make the NCAA happy?

South Carolina will eliminate six football scholarships in the next three years as punishment for committing three major NCAA violations, the school announced Wednesday.

In a 111-page response to the NCAA, the school also said it will reduce official recruiting visits in football and track and field.

The NCAA said 10 South Carolina football players and two members of its women's track team received $47,000 in improper benefits for staying at a Columbia hotel for a reduced rate that was about a quarter of what should've been charged. The university also agreed with it committed a major violation  :dunno: when athletes or prospects received $8,000 in benefits from two executives from a mentoring foundation.

Who writes this crap?
I'm with you.  This exceeds the tattoo-parlor frenzy of Ohio State.
Sounds like they were living the good life before the hammer dropped.

I wish Jody Baker would show up so he can tell us what the scoop in South Carolina is on this situation.

This sounds a lot like what happened at UNC.

Really.  The most egregious violations (to me) at UNC were academic misconduct by players, apparently with the approval of coaches.  Then there were recruiting violations and such.

This USCe stuff mostly is misappropriation of funds and improper benefits.

Sorry, I thought the UNC trouble was some sort of free hotel scandal.

I've forgotten, but it was a laundry list of violations at UNC.  They face several years of limited recruiting (I'd guess).

That is quite a list.  I think item 4 out of the 6 was the free hotel part.  Not nearly as bad as some of the other things from an institution standpoint.  But I think it is what got a lot of the players suspended/declared ineligible.
