Title: Barrett Jones key to Tide's success
Post by: pmull on December 27, 2011, 08:57:36 AM
Barrett Jones may not be Alabama’s best football player. He just might be the Crimson Tide’s MVP, however, and most versatile player.

The fourth-year junior, while primarily the team’s left tackle, has played every position on the offensive line this season except right guard — where he started for the 2009-2010 seasons.

The 6-foot-5, 310-pound lineman from Germantown, Tenn., won the SEC’s Jacobs Trophy as the league’s best blocker. A couple weeks later, he captured the prestigious Outland Trophy as the nation’s best lineman.

He graduated last August with a 4.0 grade point average in accounting. He’s working on his masters in that field now. He’s a two-time Academic All-American.

The honor he’s most proud of?

“I think I’ll be proudest of the national championship if we win that,” he said before the team broke for Christmas. “That’s the one we want worst. We’d trade all our awards for the national championship.”

I sure hope so, but I would be surprised if he returned for his senior season. I believe he has already graduated, also.

I think there is a good chance he will be back. His position in the pros will most likely be guard. Guards do not go high in the draft. CNS always recommends juniors to come back unless they are 1st round picks. His stock is about as high as it can get though.

It might be possible he would want to get some graduate work while he is there, that's a stretch but he is serious about his education.

Just as guess, but I think Barrett is probably already about halfway through his Master's degree.  It would not surprise me at all to see him come back.  A decision to come back for him would be a little easier than guys whose families live hand to mouth.

There was a recent article in the Memphis Commercial Appeal about Barrett being selected their athlete of the year.  In it they told of Barrett meeting Andrew Luck at one of the post season awards programs and asking him if he had any regrets about coming back for his senior year of college ball.  Luck replied "none at all".   The article went on to talk about how family and faith were more important to Jones than fame and fortune.

Kind of made it sound like they expected that he would be back at
Bama for his senior year.

Within the last week or so, his father also said that they would like Barrett and Harrison playing together another year.

That's good news for the Tide.
