Title: Sugar Bowl Thread
Post by: Catch Prothro on January 03, 2012, 07:53:23 PM
The Sugar Bowl isn't dumb.  On a Tuesday night after New Years, when we have seen several bowls half empty, these stands are full.

Michigan brought the bulk of the fans.  First BCS Bowl in forever, opportunity to get out of cold Michigan and party in New Orleans, priceless.

Now, if Michigan only brought a team.  Team sightings appear rare for this Michigan team, except when VA Tech shoots itself and Michigan players watch.

Michigan's team shows up with a minute to go in the first half.  First a TD, giving them the lead 7 to 6, then VA Tech fumbles the kickoff and (after a wild fake FG), Michigan settles for a FG and goes up 10-6 despite being dominated for 29 minutes of the first half.

I just turned it on and they said Michigan scored 10 points in the final 49 seconds of the half.

Correction, Va Tech dominated the first 29 minutes and 11 seconds.

I was half-watching it.  And I beat you by 7 seconds.   ;D

Turned it back with 5 seconds to go and VTI is trying a field goal to send it to OT.

I am trying to think of what sequence of events does the +1.5 help you?

It'd put a missed XP +.5 back on the board.

VTI was robbed on the replay.  That was a good catch for the TD.  Now Michigan just has to kick a FG.

3rd OT when they have to go for 2?

The refs blew this one.  How can they get it wrong with replay?

I forgot about that. I was thinking they just keep playing until tie is broken. So that could help you only lose by .5? Oh boy!

Junior Hemingway is somewhat less articulate than Ernest.

I agree, does anyone remember what conference these Refs were from, it was a terrible call for Va tech.

Looked like PAC12 Refs to me.

And looking back at the replay this morning, there was exactly one minute left in the first half when Michigan hiked the ball with 3rd and 17 at midfield;  Robinson scrambled then chunked up the ball and Michigan scored a TD.

Just because the ball touched the ground and moved slightly does not mean he did not have control.  On the contrary, I would say that it proves he did have control or he would have lost the ball.

This game was notable among the recent spate of bowl games in that there was at least some defense played. But overall, if you look at turnovers and penalties and other indicators of poor fundamentals and lack of discipline, these pretender teams have not been very impressive. It would be interesting to see how many of the BCS bowl games had more turnovers (for the two teams combined) than bama had all year.
