Title: My Bad news
Post by: SeniorTSM on January 23, 2012, 02:41:11 PM
Well I will make this sports related by saying ROLL TIDE!!!

I just found out I will be moving to Abilene TX :'(

I have been to place throughout my Military career and most have worked out, I wanted to go somewhere southeast out of Basic and they gave me Illinois right outside ST, Louis Mo
I started to get used to it there and the sent me to Korea for a year......But I got Charleston SC for my next base (and the Job sucked but loved the area) then i volunteered to teach at Pensacola, FL....then the sent me to Shreveport LA, and now Abilene...where I hope to finish my next 3yrs 7 months and drop my paperwork for retirement.

Just thought I would share, and let y'all know that this SEC Boy will be going into Big...whatever they are Country....they will soon see the Crimson way!

Ha just the luck of the draw I guess..
It could be a lot worse trust me..but there is not much out there for sure, its about 2 1/2 hours from fort worth so not the end of the world...and I could be in Minot ND or the sand trap (been there once)
so not complaining too much just kind of seems funny when you are asked to give them a list of places you would like to go and they send you somewhere not on the list....lol but thats the military..good and bad you got to suck it up.

don't they have a rattlesnake round up there ?
seems like I was out there one time and they did ...
you could get in on the snake catching ?

edit ... it's Sweetwater , right near there
but here is one they caught near Abilene , kind on the small side huh ?

Abilene doesn't look too bad. I was there a couple of times about 20 years ago. I-20 goes thru it. Nice size city of 100,000, several lakes in the area. If you like the rodeo, guns, fishing, and wide-open spaces for horseback riding/ATV's, it's a good place, eventhough it's flat. The weather can be very extreme with snow, sleet, and strong winds in winter.
Let us now how it goes after you've been there awhile.

Good luck.  Funny enough there is a story my husband heard at one of his trainings at work and "Going to Abilene" was a metaphor or doing something nobody wants to do but everybody just goes with the flow.  I'm sure it's just a story  :tinfoil:

Texas isn't so bad.  You will probably enjoy Texans once you can get past their "texas is awesome OMG OMG".  They have a good independent spirit.

Endear yourself to your new neighbors by loudly proclaiming, "At least LSU's QB made it through the whole game." They'll love you for it.

Let me welcome you to Abilene. Hope you like it dry and windy. I have been here six years now and I have been surprised how many people you see with Bama gear on. I have Texas Tech fans on one side and Sooners on the other, but the red & white flag with the "A" flys high and proud. You will not be alone! Roll Tide Roll

#+  Way to go, TW, making the newbie feel welcome in dry, dusty Abilene.  Alabama fans can find comfort most anywhere.

There are worse places.  If you need a football fix you can take in some Abilene Christian Univ games.  You can also get to some aTm games that might be interesting.
