Title: I had a "bama" encounter today...
Post by: MLB10 on February 07, 2012, 02:40:26 PM
So y'all know I live in Texas.  Today I took my oldest to an orthodontist to get his teeth looked at and the orthodontist had a Sugar Bowl plaque & pics of an Alabama/Notre Dame game.  He came in and saw my Alabama shirt and we started talking football.  He played under Dan Devine.  He said that he played in the game when AL and ND were 1&2 and Notre Dame won.  I asked if it was intimidating to go against the Bear.  He told me he got to meet him  :o He said that even though his family would never wear Alabama clothes they pulled for Alabama a lot because it was the only place "down south" that wouldn't call the Notre Dame players slurs and throw empty whiskey bottles at them.  He said the people at Bama were so hospitable and playing at BDS was an amazing experience.  Felt proud to be a Bama fan and I wanted to share.   Y'all keep this in mind the next time we hear something about tree killers and tea baggers.

I watched that game with a girl that I was dating and her parents. Parents loved me before the game. Afterwards, not so much.

It was before my time but it sounds like a heartbreaker.  Is it bad that I was more impressed that he met Bear Bryant than that he was the president of some dental society

Hey don't feel old.

One of my husband's uncles tells me I cannot be an Alabama fan if I don't know who Leroy Jones is or something like that.  I am not good with things I didn't live through.  I sucked at history in school and I'm visual so there is no way I can keep things straight from before the time I was born.  I have 3 boys between the ages of 5 and 8- I'm doing good to remember what happened this morning.

Not as much conversation but my wife and I were in Boquete, Panama last week on vacation.  We were walking down a side street, I had my Alabama football t-shirt on and, from inside a tour guide office we hear ROLL TIDE.  Guy was a gringo from VA but had watched the NCG and wanted to talk American football with some BAMA fans.  My wife told him about a couple of her encounters with the Bear and he talked about what an idiot Les Miles is.  We were a long way from home but it is a small world!

During his career for Alabama, Jordan received high praises from coach Bear Bryant. Bryant stated, "He was one of the finest football players the world has ever seen. If runners stayed between the sidelines, he tackled them. He never had a bad day, he was 100 percent every day in practice and in the games."

must have been legion field - looked it up and it was a 0-7 loss.  When he said "down there in Alabama" and talking about how great it was I wasn't thinking Legion Field.  That place is not known for awesome facilities but maybe back in the day it was?

ND played at Legion field in Oct 1980 and won 7-0 after Bama QB Don Jacobs fumbled ball inside Bama's 5 yard on the second play after Alabama had stopped ND inside 5 yardline for 4 times.

Next game at Legion field was in September 1986. ND's QB Steve Beuerlin sacked by Alabama linebacker ( Bisquit ) Cornelius Bennett, Danile Moore painted the picture named "The Sack"! Should have been a fumble. Beuerlin shoulder was injured and didn't play in rest of game. Bama won like 26-16.

The 1973 Sugar bowl is when they played ranked 1 and 2. Alabama had ND backed up to their own endzone  with only 3 minutes or so and leading the game by 1 point . It was 3rd and long, like 3rd and 18. The ND QB threw from out of his own endzone and a player that hadn't caught a pass all year long for ND caught it and made the first down. Then they ran out the clock.

Leaving a Legion Field game in the late 70s, out of nowhere a ND fan was making a real ass of himself. I forget who we beat that day but it wasn't ND. The post game crush was pressing out a field level portal to the street. As if on cue, a Bama fan throttled the Irish fan. Beat him to his knees. The crowd continued to push, stepping over the badly beaten loud mouth idiot(LOL). My foot hit something beneath,--which turned out to be a brand new Notre Dame hat. RTR

I was devastated by that defeat more than any I can remember. I was in Colorado at the time and after the game stomped through the snow to recover in the IHOP with about 24 pancakes.
