Quote BIRMINGHAM | A worldwide Roman Catholic broadcasting network based in Alabama filed suit Thursday against the Obama administration overs its new mandate that religious organizations pay for their workers' birth control. The suit, filed by the nonprofit EWTN Global Catholic Network, claims the rules are unconstitutional because they would require the broadcaster to violate church principles on the sanctity of life. Network president Michael Warsaw said the lawsuit was meant to defend Catholics and others from being forced to fund contraception and other services. "This is a moment when EWTN, as a Catholic organization, has to step up and say that enough is enough," Warsaw said in a statement. "Our hope is that our lawsuit does just that." Justice Department spokesman Charles Miller declined comment, saying the administration would answer the claims in court. Most employers and insurers have to cover birth control free of charge under the nation's new health care law. The administration recently announced that church-related institutions like charities, colleges and hospitals must comply after a one-year grace period. #+ #+ |
