Bryant believed the Atlanta media was out to destroy him, and according to Bryant biographer Allen Barra, “As for the Atlanta writers trying to destroy him, future events would indicate that Bryant was not entirely paranoid,” (The Last Coach, p. 254)............ Prior to 1958, Ga. Tech was a premier football team in the south, Coach Bobby Dodd was the "darling" of southern football coaches, and the Atlanta print media was considered a credible regional news outlet. Life was good in the big city. All that began to change with the arrival of Paul Bryant as head football coach at Alabama. Although he faced the challenges of rebuilding the progam, he began to have immediate success against Ga. Tech. Bama beat Tech in 1958, 1959, 1960 and 1961, lost to them in 1962, then beat them again in 1963 and 1964. Talk about dominance, six wins in seven years against the coach idolized by the Atlanta media. Boy were they butthurt. This is when Ga. Tech decided to take it's ball and go home. No more playing Alabama...no more being in the same conference with Bama. Of course, along the way was the Darwin Holt/Chick Granning incident and the Saturday Evening Post article by Furman Bisher aledging Coach Bryant and Georgia coach Wally Butts conspired to fix the Ala-Ga game. The Post article resulted in a law suit which contributed the accumulation of wealth for coach Bryant. Buttom line is that coach Bryant and Alabama football "knocked the shine off" Ga. Tech and Bobby Dodd. The Atlanta print media never got over it. Now, some 50 years later, neither Ga. Tech nor the Atlanta print media are relevant to national prominence or championship in thier respective fields. I started cutting newspaper clippings about Alabama football in 1958. My walls were covered by 1962.
