Title: Men's Basketball Closes Out Regular Season at Ole Miss (3:00 SEC Network)
Post by: pmull on March 03, 2012, 07:55:22 AM
The University of Alabama men's basketball team ends the 2011-12 regular season Saturday afternoon at Mississippi. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. on SEC Network outlets and on the radio affiliates of the Crimson Tide Sports Network.

The Crimson Tide has won seven of its last nine games and four straight to improve to 20-9 on the season and 9-6 in SEC action. The winning streak has helped the Tide record its second straight 20-win season and the 26th in the program's history.

In the first meeting between the two programs, UA edged Mississippi, 69-67, in double overtime at Coleman Coliseum behind a 16-point, 12-rebound performance from JaMychal Green.

"We've got a tough game on the road against Ole Miss," UA head coach Anthony Grant said of Saturday's game. "It was a challenging double-overtime game the last time we played them. We've got to be prepared for it to be a very emotional game with it being `Senior Night' at their place and a lot on the line right now."

Need to win this game for both SEC and NCAA tourney implications.  And that will flow thrugh to recruiting.

A defensive ball buster the first few minutes. 3-2 Bama. 3 FT's for Bama. OM has the only FG.

6-4 Bama with about 12 minutes left in the half. Randolph hit a 3, Bama's only FG. JG had his ankle taped on the bench after turning it. Sloppy play so far, but intense "D" by both teams.

Bama stone cold shooting, Down 20-15.

Bama 24% shooting. That says it all. Bama getting beat 26-17.

Bama's had some bad halves of basketball this season, but this was the worst. 6-27 shooting and down 28-17. The score should be much worse.

Down 11 at the half. Shooting has to improve the 2nd half. 11 PF at half but OM can't cash in. 28-17 for anyone with no access to game. Eblen hasn't fouled or made any turnovers.

The announcers made a comment that the team didn't arrive until about 10:30 last night and as a result did not have a shoot around today. This may have a bearing on their performance.

More times than not this team has a good half and a bad half. Back to 4. RTR

Pathetic performance by players and the coach. They are playing for everyting, a first round bye in the SEC Tourney and a spot in the NCAA Tourney and they play like this. Grant shares equal blame for such a horrible game.

Bama played bad but the ref's helped Ole Miss too much. They could play physical on defense and we could not. It is hard to stop a SEC forward when it is a foul if you bump him or if he bumps you. They also let them take 3-4 steps in the lane to get their shot off. I can not think of one call in this game that went our way. You could tell CAG was pissed.

We need to play well in the SEC Tournament next week. Tenn is winning right now over Vandy so it looks like we will play So Car on Thursday and Tenn on Friday.

This may be a blessing in disguise. The projection showed if we get the 4th seed, yes we get the bye, but we come out of it playing Kentucky. If we're 5th seed, no bye, but we play SC.

Dayum. >:( Ran out of time. The Ole Chech cheerleaders did some great back flips. Marked this off when OM drove the lane to score a lay in with 1:32-- FOUL THE GUY! Bama played hard but went back to 30% shooting today. For the Eblen fans, he was in on the 10-13 pt. run at the start of the 2nd half, but only had 2 PF and a misssed put back to show for it. To his credit he had a great defensive play (5 sec. guard) later in that half. Did I mention the Ole Miss back flips?

I hate taking that kind of momentum into the SEC tourney. :( but RTR!

Tenn beat Vandy so we get the # 5 seed. We will play USCe on Thursday. After we beat USCe we will play Tenn on Friday. After we beat Tenn we will most likely play Kentucky on Saturday.

Don't get too cocky about us beating UT. They can definitely beat us, but I think we win this one, it's about a 60-40 proposition for our guys.

With injuries and suspension the problem is compounded, but the Tide is as of the last game of the season, still searching for the best combination of players on the floor.  I have always said that the college regular season was just a dress rehearsal for the tournaments but CAG has taken or has been forced to take it, to extremes this year, in casting our characters. One thing for certain is that JG and TL need to be 100% by the first game.

A good defensive effort is a given with this team. They work the boards hard all the time. But offense needs to be thought of in terms of team rhythm, tempo, finesse,--  more like golf than football. Precision is key,-- not 3 yds and a cloud. HTH

I was not trying to be cocky about beating USCe or Tenn. It was an attempt to stay upbeat and positive after a bad game at Ole Miss. I do think we will beat USCe easily. IMO our road just got more difficult. The # 4 seed that we will play on Friday will either be Florida or Vandy.

Our RPI did not take too big of a hit after yesterday's loss. It dropped from 28 to 32.

I was saddened with the outcome of yesterdays game but that has become more of an expectation from this team as they have been like a roller coaster this year, a lot of ups and downs. I'm like most folks in feeling the agony that goes with some of their loses, the quality of play, but I've pretty much come to the conclusion that maybe I'm expecting too much from them.

As I read Cecil Hurts column this morning, reality started to set in a little for me about them but I struggled even then as to wanting to accept the fact that this team is too inconsistent to be a serious contender for any of the tournament play, SEC and NCAA. If ever I thought that this team would play an exceptional game, it was yesterday, but the game yesterday resembled what we have seen in the last six weeks, inconsistency.

I'm still as big a fan as I was when the season started but I am very dissappointed in where this team is today. If I had to point a finger at the reason for the collapse of this years team it would be directed at two players and that problem shouldn't be there next year from them.

Maybe the team will hit a hot streak and win a few tournament games, I'm hoping so anyway. Roll Tide!!

I will be cocky and say we will destroy USC as a little payback for that travesty called a BB game we had against them earlier in the year. Then we play Florida, not UT. Personally, I'm glad we get another shot at Florida. We need to beat them and show we can play with them.  Here's the schedule for the Tourney:

That is how things like that,-- losing to USCe-- happen. Going into tourney play shooting 1-4 (25%) or 1-3 (33%) will punch your ticket home as fast as anything.

ABC owns ESPN and the SEC Network and owns the television rights to the SEC Tournament.
