Title: I have a thought and suggestion....
Post by: JodyBaker22 on March 19, 2012, 10:27:17 PM
I know I don't come here often, but I would love to make a suggestion.  Taz was such a huge part of Bama football forums and such a true and tried fan who truly loved the Crimson Tide.  In honor of such a huge fan and an even greater man, why don't we rename one of the member levels after him.  I think it would be a huge tribute to him.  God bless.

good idea...even though this is my first time posting on this forum....might I suggest also an idea of naming a forum after him? he WAS the "halftime" forum on tidesports. is there a forum here that = halftime from tidesports that could be nammed for Taz?  Wonderful idea Jody.

I have been thinking about both of these suggestions the last couple of days.  We definitely should do something, but I wanted to give it a little time first.

Right now, if you have 1 post, you are at the ed level.  When you get to 2 posts, you are at the gilmer level.  Maybe after gilmer, we have a new "slacker" level.

I'm open to other suggestions as well.

Football is big at Alabama. Our players and coaches are legends. Fans are a dime a dozen and we don't ask for special recognition to be one. I know it may be hard for y'all to understand. We have a HOF Board just for these purposes, but our focus remains on the guys in Crimson. HTH

I miss my two e-freinds very much. I would like to see them honored in some way but I have to agree with WV's comment. The HOF Board is were we should recognize HOF posters.

I disagree with one point:  "fans are a dime a dozen".  This is true in general, but I put the posters here in a different category than your average nut job, tea bagging sports fan (with a couple of exceptions of course... you decide who those exceptions are).

Having said that, I am fine with just putting a couple of threads in the HOF.  I purposely waited a couple of days to have this discussion to give everyone time to get over the shock.  I do appreciate the sentiment and the suggestions in the first 2 posts though.

Ok, One thing about this bothers me and it's this: Taz was not born with the physical advantages the "guys in Crimson" were.  His heart was all Bama though.  Those players go there 90 percent of the time with the eye on the NFL.  Even if they don't make it, they get a free college ride.  Taz gave his heart to Alabama with nothing in return except the enjoyment of the Crimson Tide.  Some players give their all, some don't.  If he had been born with the physical abilities of some of these kids he could have been the greatest who ever played.  I won't worship an 18 year old boy because he was blessed by God with the ability to play football well.  What you make out of what gifts you were given is more a mark of your character than the gifts God chose to give you.

PS: I know some very private details about one of "the greats" in crimson and despite everyone thinking he's a stand up guy I can tell you he's a heel, a phony, and a crappy human being.  So no...no player or coach worship here.

I'll bet you will be happier on the Jerry Springer board where you can run down all the Tide players you want. HTH

just a thought, on the old tide sports board, no matter how dark the day was, I always looked forward to seeing Taz's hopping frog...it ALWAYS put a smile on my face.......could we put his hopping frog along with Coach's avitar in the section "who's online"......put them to the right side?

If I wanted to run someone down, believe me I could.  I choose not to do that...and not because I respect the person who is doing it.  I'm sure every college program has some like him lurking around- that's life.  The "dime a dozen" remark rubs me the wrong way.  The players are JUST kids and they grow up to be JUST people like the rest of us.  It's fun to watch but a 20 year old boy is not going to be my hero and his life has no more value than anyone else's.  Sorry if that's not hardcore enough for you but the point where I mourn more for a celebrity or public figure than a real person I've interacted with is the point where I will reevaluate my priorities.

HTH!

Look, I'm not tryin to be an a-hole...but I don't care if you think I am either.  You all need to realize this is an internet forum and not the Bryant Museum or something.  If you are that caught up in how someone is recognized in an internet forum then you need to step back from the computer for a few months and get over it then come back.  Fans may be a dime a dozen, but unfortunately good ones like Taz are not.  More importantly than being a good fan. Great people like him are NOT a dime a dozen.

I sincerely apologize for causing any kind of controversy, and would never do so intentionally. This is, however a forum that what was created and molded not by "Bama Football", but by the posters and personalities that contribute.  There is no college player, pro player, actor/actress, etc.  that is bigger than any of us.

One of the jokes that many people on tide forums was the fact that I was really a "Bama" fan.... Taz being one of them.  He always tried to get me to give him a roll tide.... I always laughed and said never in a million years!!!!

After his passing I realized that true friendship, people and the lives they touched were much bigger than the petty things that you see on forums.  At 2 pm when he was being put to rest, I was on a golf course in Myrtle Beach.  At precisely 2 pm on that day I let out a big ol' ROLL TIDE for him.  I turned heads, may have made a couple of people miss some shots, but I didn't care.  It was for him.

There are many things bigger than football and idolizing players you will never meet or speak to.  God bless you all.  (and no, I have no more Roll Tides. ;)  )

I applaud you for your feelings and your statement to the forum, and yes for your Roll Tide as well, very classy.  :D

I idolized Taz somewhat in that he was always an underdog when it came to doing anything physical because of the spina bifida that he was suffering from. As I watched the slides of him at his visitation last week, I then realized what a hero that he really was to me. Here was a handsom young man, stricken with a crippling disease at birth, that was so young and energetic up until he finally had to be confined to his wheelchair. Even then, he was his competitive self in participating in wheelchair Rugby, I never knew this until he came to the Auburn/Alabama basketball game recently and we met before the game and chatted for a while. He seemed to love everything about sports but he absolutely loved Bama sports.

Taz never scored any touchdowns on the football field or won any National Championships but he sure left me with the impression of a person that should have had that privilege. Taz was a winner, no matter who you were, he would always win you over and there's a lot of folks in this world wish that they could have that pleasure.

I'm so glad that you knew Taz as I knew him, a winner, and nothing can ever tarnish my thoughts or feelings for him. I hope you will still stay part of our forum, I've always enjoyed reading your posts, especially when you and Taz would pick at each other. Again, thank you for your post and you just became one of my heros as well. Roll Tide!  ;)

I am still thinking about this.  My latest idea is to create a new board that is named after the cemetery just outside of Bryant-Denny.  I believe it is called Evergreen Cemetery, but someone please correct me if I am wrong.

We could move the threads over to there.  It would also be a place for people to go and post stories about the forum members who have passed away.

Great idea, Super. It is Evergreen. When my mother was in college, the coeds used to go there to smoke, since this was banned on campus.

Agree, great idea, SC.
OT, that was indeed a while ago.  When I was at Bama, the coeds went to the Atlanta Pop Festival to .... uh... smoke.

.You mindless, blathering idiots!  Jody doesn't care about this board. He'll be yucking it up with his USCe numbnut buddies about how he led the charge to stick an admittantly annoying hopping frog smack down the middle of your forum. Are you gay pirates as desparate for friends that you will go along with that?

One frog, then two. Who's to say your dead guy is more important than the other dead guy. We want a choo choo train crossing the Quad. Then what next?  3 dead guys, six, eight. Later 30 dead guys. Who is going to say they do not each merit an annoying icon as well. Before long the forum looks like Spencer Gifts in the Mall or Souvenir City at the beach.  Junk flying everywhere. Use your heads for something besides a hat rack!

[/quote].You mindless, blathering idiots!  Jody doesn't care about this board. He'll be yucking it up with his USCe numbnut buddies about how he led the charge to stick an admittantly annoying hopping frog smack down the middle of your forum. ???  I would never make light of losing someone by "yucking it up" with my Gamecock buddies.  In fact I have never even spoken to any of them about this.  My intentions are truly sincere and I'm sorry that you can't see that.  Hell, I don't even go to Gamecock forums. (search em all, bamawv and you won't see a single post on any of them in YEARS from me)
I come here to talk to my Bama friends that I've met over the past 5 years.  That's it.  Im cool with you, bamawv and really want to like you, but then you start typing....

I just made the new board and moved some threads over to it.

This may be the perfect solution. The symbolism is moving, and, I'll admit, it caught me off-guard and brought a tear to my eye. At-a-boy SC.

I don't post on message boards much these days but feel the need to offer my two cents on the Evergreen Cemetery board.

I think the Evergreen Cemetery board was a really BAD IDEA and gives people an icky feeling when they log in to a sports board to see a category for cemetery.

I loved TAZ too, and that's one reason I created "TAZ's Good Morning Thread."
It would be fine to have dropped the old threads to somewhere like Hall of Fame or a similar name......but a cemetery..... NO!

I wish you would just delete my thread. It is depressing now.  TAZ's spirit is not buried in a cemetery....it is free and high.

I see and respect your point, CP, but I support the cemetery choice. People do die, no matter what euphemisms we use. And almost all of us know Evergreen and its closeness to our beloved BDS. Save me a plot there.

Wish you would post more. It's great to see that Crimson Phoenix name on the forum.

Peolpe have different feelings and reactions to cemeteries.  I am a history buff and enjoy walking through the older sections of graveyards and reading the headstones and trying to imagine something about the person.  My Mother has been dead for over 25 years, but I never make a trip back home without visiting her grave.  I know she is not there, but it triggers many wonderful memories for me.  That's what Evergreen Cemetery will do for me and the memories and admiration I had for TAZ. .

Glad you said that.  I agree, there are good memories to gain from cemeteries.
CP, we'd enjoy more of your posts.  And if you're uncomfortable walking in cemeteries, take the long away home (through the Quad)!

This has been an odd thread.

I'm not sure that any implementations that SC makes (or doesn't make) will satisfy each and every member here, but I do feel confident that neither Taz nor CHC would've wanted all of the disagreement in this thread to have occurred.

The CHC contingency has decided to throw all future voting leverage to CNS!
