Quote
istory.  Tradition.  Excellence.  Winning.

These are words that can be used to describe the University of Alabama’s decorated football program.

They can also be used to describe the legacy of quarterbacks who have found success during their time in Tuscaloosa.

From the current reigning BCS national championship game offensive MVP A.J. McCarron to the likes of Joe Namath, the Crimson Tide have had a number of gifted field generals who have contributed to their 14 national championships.

With a long list of successful candidates to choose from, undoubtedly a few worthy choices failed to make the cut.

Here are the top 10 quarterbacks in Alabama history....

Good list, but it's hard to imagine that Bart Starr is not on here. I know he never had a great career at Bama because of Ears, but he is one of the greatest QBs in NFL history, won the first two Super Bowls, and is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Yet he doesn't even make the top ten at Bama. Just imagine what Bear could have done with Bart as his QB.

A very good list. Hard to argue with any of those names.

Who got left off?
Richard Todd
Gary Rutledge
Scott Hunter (Not a good winning pct. but he rewrote the Bama passing records)

I'm OK with that list. I think A.J. MAY be a little premature, but I think he will be worthy by the time he leaves the Capstone.

But, what, no Brian Burgdorf?  :o :o :o

He was #12, right behind Spencer Pennington.  :D

The list is a great group of football players at Alabama, but I too wondered about Scott Hunter. RTR!

I cast a vote for Dixie Howell, an All-American quarterback in the 1930s, who had Don Hudson as his great receiver (Howell to Hudson) and Paul Bryant as the other end. Howell also punted. He took a 10-0 team to the 1935 Rose Bowl and beat Stanford. Not a bad record.

Good point, and I think if Shealy is on the list that you can't overlook Terry Davis. He was our first wishbone QB and brought Bama back to prominence.

Dixie Howell was way before my time. I agree with Terry Davis. The wishbone fit his skills like a glove.

Yeah, Terry Davis. I knew I had forgotten one.

Good list.  I saw 'em all play except Harry Gilmer.

Good for you, Leewillie.  I assume you mean you saw them play 'in person'.
I've met several of them; none of the recent ones.  Guess I spent more time around the athletic complex during the 60s.  :dunno:

You?

Yep, saw 'em in  person.  Was a student in the 60's, had season tickets thru the 70's,  I generally make it to a couple of games every year. My wife enjoys homecoming so we try to make it every year.  Usually see the Tennessee or LSU game, whichever one is in Tuscaloosa.    Did not know any of them personally, although Pat Trammell married a girl from my hometown..  Have met Jeff Rutledge several times at various athletic functions around Nashville.

Interesting time spread for the 10 listed:

1 was prior to The Bryant era ( Gilmer 1945)

6 were during the Bryant era (Trammell 61, Namath 62-64, Sloan 64-65,
   Stabler 65-67, Rutledge 75-78, Shealy 79)

2 have been in the Saban era (McElroy 2009, McCarron 2011)

Between Shealy and McElroy there was a 30 year span, interrupted only by Jay Barker in 92-94.

I think this illustrates how very important the quarterback is to winning National Championships.

Without Freddie Kitchens this list is a farce.

First, let me said that Freddie Kitchens does not belong in this conversation. However, he earned my respect during his playing days. He took more hits than any Alabama QB I can remember and he never stayed down or left the game. He may not go down as an all time great but he was tough as nails.

You don't remember Brodie Croyle, he got the crap beat out of him his senior season.

Brodie did take a beating but he was not tough. The barn still talks about how he would fall down to avoid a hit. He also left the field several times after taking a hit and missed many games during his career. My point with Kitchens is he took those hits and shook them off and to my memory never missed even a play due to injury.

You saw Dixie Howell in the 1930s?

NO, never saw Dixie, he was well before my time.  He was not on the list I was referring to.
