Title: Good Review of the NL West, Especially the Braves
Post by: Marshal Dillon on March 25, 2011, 11:04:39 PM
Personally, I'm worried about the bullpen. Billy Wagner was a BIG cog of that bullpen last year.

Whoa! Bernie Carbo, what a blast from the past! He was a good hitter who never seem to hit his full potential. I remember him at the Reds and Red Sox.

yeah me too ...  ;D

funny story ... or not ? about him .

I met Bernie while doing the SEC tailgaters radio show in Mobile several years ago
we were waiting for him to go on the air (roid talk) so we were talking
I kind of recognized him but couldn't place him for sure
I said ... man I know you from somewhere but I can't put my finger on it

he says , I was the coach for the Pelicans over in Pensacola ...
I said .. no thats not it ...
then he says I was the Coach at Theodore
I say ... no thats not it ...
then he says , well I played for the Reds and the Red Sox and ... I stopped him right there

pointed my finger at him and said , bottom of the 8th , 1975 World Series , you hit a
3 run homer to tie the game then Fisk hit a homer in the 12th to win game 6 , the wave it fair hit !

he looked at me like I had two heads and said , man ?  that was a long time ago, you remember that ?.
I said like it was yesterday , I was playing ball back then and that was the best World Series I had
ever seen ... that hit in the 8th was awesome ! I thought Cincinnati had ya'll .

we have been friends ever since
he gave me a autographed picture of the hit , a signed rookie card and a signed baseball
Bernie and his wife Tammy are awesome people , I am lucky to know them .
he is going to coach my youngest son on hitting as soon as I get him out of basketball mode ...

I love hearing him tell baseball stories from back then and boy he can tell them !

Yep, I agree with you. It seems that when they have a team with the big bats, they don't have anyone in the bullpen that can get anyone out in the late innings.

I think Kimbrel and Venters will do great. Wagner was awesome, but I think those two guys will wrap up games very well. Looking forward to this year. Can't wait for April 8th!! Already planned the entire day around that game. :)

I hope so. The Braves could have won at least 3-4 World Series in the 1990's into the 2000's if they had had a closer like Wagner. What a lost oppurtunity.      :(

We have some great bats this year. So they will make up for some of the pitching. Derek Lowe did not pitch good at all today but it seems they do better when the weather is warmer. I hope so. RTR!

I hope they have a great year. If they stay healthy, they have a real chance. It's gonna be strange not to see Cox in the dugout.

Gosh yes, Cox as a Manger and Schurholtz as GM man they were a good team. RTR!

Schurholtz is the true genius behind the Braves and their incredible farm system. He was originally the GM for the KC Royals when they had all those great teams in the late 1970's into the 1980's. Since he left, KC has been a total loser in baseball.

Dead on, MD. Schurholtz = the nuts and bolts of the Braves.

Very true. It will take some getting used to, but I think they've got the right man for the job. FG is an outstanding young manager, and I think the Marlins are going to rue the day they decided to get rid of him all because of Hanley Ramirez.

I hope they do better against the Mets in the regular season than they did in the preseason. Did they even win a game against them? At any rate, the anticipation is indeed great for the 2011 season.

It really is going to be strange to have someone standing in Bobby Cox's place!  I hope the Braves have a spectacular year. And it sounds like it IS possible!
