Here's how quickly conference expansion speculation travels these days. On Wednesday, TCU Athletics Director Chris Del Conte was quoted by a radio host in Lubbock, Texas, as telling a breakfast crowd that the once-dead Big 12 now has "schools like FSU, Clemson and Miami trying to get in."

That raised eyebrows that perhaps Del Conte was confirming what many people already believe. Del Conte later said his comments were misconstrued and that he was referring to the rumor mill associated with the Big 12.

"If you listen to the radio interview my comments were in reference to where (the Big 12) was a year ago, and now we're being talked about by these schools," Del Conte told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "It's gratifying because a year ago we were talking about the Big 12 not being around. It's just remarkable the transformation in less than a year. That's all I was addressing."

No one should be surprised if Conte's initial comments were true. The chairman of Florida State's board of trustees wants to consider the Big 12. Former Seminoles star Derrick Brooks -- also a former board member -- says the Big 12 reached out to the school....

If FSU and UM had continued their success I think it is safe to say that the ACC would have been a distant second to the SEC.
