Title: The Hatfields and McCoys : Monday night, 8c History Channel
Post by: BAMAWV on May 27, 2012, 12:44:34 PM
It's the true American story of a legendary family feud—one that spanned decades and nearly launched a war between Kentucky and West Virginia.

A little inside info to add to your viewing enjoyment: The McCoy women are all smelly because they sleep with pigs and their men are latent (and unwashed) homosexuals. HTH

it wasn't bad , had to wait until the grandson left so I missed the start
but got to see what I missed later ...
heck of a story , a different time , I have to wonder
how many of today would have made it back then ...

what Hatfield did after the battle with the Yankees ?
should McCoy have left for home with him ? or shot him ?

Forget the trip to the beach this summer and instead take the family to visit McDowell County, WV or Harlan County, KY. Enjoy a trip back in time but bring guns and ammo. LOL

and loved every minute of it . maybe I can get back up there soon ...

this is what we don't see so much of

The parts of WV and KY I'm talking about aren't listed in your travel guides and aren't close to the interstates. Neighbors setting fire to the homes of other neighbors, leading industry is copper and other theft, 3rd generation welfare, that use spot lights to fill their freezers and to rape, and then set fire to the human evidence. They'll lock you in the men's room while the entire bar fondles your wife. HTH

Harlan County (KY) popped to mind simply because my Dad was born there. All those southern WV and eastern KY counties are smack dab in coal country. The miners and their unions, the wealthy operators and their gun thugs, is where the root of the evil developed.

Never saw the show but bet I would enjoy seeing the TV take on reality.

I've been watching it.  I would have to agree with Ricky.  The vulgarity is out of control.  It adds nothing to the story and is only there for shock value IMO.  It is an interesting series though.

I've heard rough language before. Probably more historically accurate with the cussing. You can hear worse on any playground in America so this gives you the opportunity to point out to your children which words and terms you consider inappropriate.  The kids aren't hearing anything for the first time and you at least have some control in your living room (of course the big control--OFF).

I'm not sure when language restrictions stopped on TV. I guess this is the difference between pay TV (cable, satellite) and free TV through the airwaves (network broadcasting). But it seems worse in the last year.

I think it is cable vs. airwaves.

I'm not talking about just the occasional bad word when you stub your toe (or get shot lol), or even a whole string of bad words.  I'm referring to things like what Mrs. McCoy said to Randall about bearing more children after he returned home from the war.  It doesn't offend me, in fact there is a very similar incident in the bible.  I just thought it was unnecessary, added nothing to the story, and was only there for shock value.  I think it is a very interesting story, and all of that stuff just gets in the way of telling the story.

I have my doubts that whole communities of supposedly church going folks really talked like that 140 years ago.  I think this is a recent trend that I first noticed in the movie Cold Mountain.  Contrast this to "Little House on the Prairie" or "Gun Smoke".  Those were probably too pristine, but I think the pendulum has definitely swung the other way now, by far.

something so far in the show they may have gotten wrong
the Hatfield-McCoy baby from Roseanna and Johnse died in real life .
at least that's what I was told ... Roseanna got measles and lost the baby

it's been good so far but they need to back off on the "western" flavor a little
or maybe it's because Costner is making more cowboyish   :dunno:

My bet on that one is so the movie company didn't spend the next 10 years defending personal injury law suits and workmans comp claims.

the location people spent three weeks looking over the land and
found it was almost identical the the real place
that and  Romania is apparently known for great stunt people
which like you said cuts down law suits http://www.history.com/shows/hatfields-and-mccoys/videos/romania-becomes-appalachia#romania-becomes-appalachia

The landscape in Romania does look a lot like the 3 or 4 county area of WV where I live. It does NOT resemble the area of WV where the fued took place. The mountains (hills) along the Kentucky - West Virginia border aren't any close elevation wise. Also the hills in Pikeville/ Logan area are extremely steep. But while the mountain vistas are well preserved where I live, the hills in coal country are deeply scarred by mountaintop removal and clear cut logging.

However, one section of coal country that is nice, mostly through coal company reclaimation is called the Hatfields and McCoy Trail. This has been set aside for hundreds of miles of 4 wheeler trails which has become quite a tourist draw. Somehow (probably by the cost of trail tickets) the state has managed to keep the local felons, psycopaths, moonshiners and crank cookers away from the tourist. I'll find a link later.

I haven't been there but it seems they have bars, restaurants, and B&B accomodations along with the typical state park offerings of cabins, lean-tos and camp sites. ATV rentals and outfitters and trails marked and designated for all different proficiency levels.

I know a lot is added to movies for dramatic effect, but I can't understand why they portrayed Anse Hatfield as a deserter from the Confederate army. Everything I read said he and McCoy came home after the war. I found nothing stating he had deserted.

They all looked like a bunch of bumbling idiot hillbillies in that last battle scene.  Guys throwing dynamite into trees and having it bounce back on them, another guy sticking his hand out in front of a gun and getting shot, Randall being drunk and running right into a tree and just about knocking himself out, Cottontop falling asleep during the gunfight... I'm sure there were other things I am forgetting.  After two nights of build up, that seemed like an odd direction for the story to take with the final battle.

You know this wasn't the only time federal troops were threatened on my boys down in coal country. The unionizing of the coal fields brought about huge gun conflicts. At one point, the WV Air Guard dropped bombs on Union supporters from Charleston going toward Logan Co. for an armed conflict. Sid Hatfield was at that time Sheriff of the town of Matewan. The woman's Granddad was sheriff of Fayette Co. at that time and rode horseback and carried a sword. We have his sword in our home.

talking about the show on one of the fishing sites I visit and a guy
posted this ...  :dunno:

Quote
I am a direct descendant of the Hatfield's. There were several reasons why the feud started.

1. William Anderson Hatfield (aka Devil Anse Hatfield) deserted the Confederate Army to go home and take care of his starving family. Randolph McCoy (aka Ran'el McCoy) wanted him tried for desertion but they wouldn't try him after the war.

2. Ran'el McCoy's pig got into Floyd Hatfield's corn and when Floyd Hatfield wouldn't give the pig back without re-imbursement for the corn, McCoy sued and lost in court and had to pay for the corn and lost the pig too. Pizzed him off BIG time.

3. Johnse Hatfield impregnated Roseanna McCoy and wouldn't marry her or support the child. That added insult to the "injury". Contrary to the TV version, he impregnated her as an insult to the McCoy's and Johnse had no intention on marrying her.

4. Devil Hatfield harvested lumber on land that was supposedly not his and got wealthy from it and Ran'el McCoy thought his family was swindled out of the land.

5. A little known fact left out is that at a local party, several McCoy boys slighted the "honor" of a Hatfield girl and a couple of them were severely beaten by the Hatfield girl's date at the party.

It all added up to a strong hatred between the families and the feud actually drew in a lot of local's who chose sides and fought too.

Sorry for the long read, but I have several very old newspapers with articles about the feud and these stories were passed down in our family also. So far, I think the show is pretty accurate, all things considered.
