Title: *** US Open Golf ***
Post by: Chechem on June 14, 2012, 12:09:28 PM

Obviously I can't watch the Open this year, but I'm trying to follow it via the web.  Tiger is E, Phil is +4, Bubba is +3 (all after 9).

Hope you all enjoy the coverage.  :(

Hunter Hamrick is +1 after 3 holes. Two weeks ago Hamrick was playing for Bama in the NCAA Golf Championship. After 6 straight days of NCAA golf he flew to Memphis and played 2 more rounds to qualify for the US Open. I will be pulling for him this week. I would love to see him make the cut.

Former Bama player Michael Thompson is in the field. He is E after 10 holes. At present he is T13.

Roll Tide.

I am trying to watch some, but I love watching those young men Tee off and play the holes. They are fantastic for their age. RTR!

Only 9 players under par so far. Even looks like a good score. Still early of course.

Tiger finishes 2nd on the day so far at -1. MT getting a lot of TV time and is in the booth right now analyzing his game with Jimmy Roberts.

Friday was a tough day for Thompson (+5 for the day), but he's still right in it at +1 for the tournament.

Tiger struggled at times, but is E through 15 and -1 (tied for the lead).

Phil at +7

Thompson could hit a ball and get a break. Grahem Dowell was really off today, along with Lee Greenwood. Tomorrow will be a big day and I won't get to see it got a conference I have to attend. RTR!

If he wins this weekend, there's going to be a total meltdown from some former poster out in the Colorado area. I can't remember his name, though ....

Hunter Hamrick had the best round of the day at -3. He is +4 overall and easily made the cut. Not bad for an amateur that was playing for Bama two weeks ago.

That shows that he can win, if he settles down and plays for fun (which is almost impossible at a major).

ESPN radio is my friend (if the connection holds).

All 3 of the leaders started with a bogey.  NOBODY is under par now!

I haven't had a chance to watch any of the tournament, but this course is playing as tough as any that they have played on in quite some time per the scores. It's good to see the Bama boys hanging in there, it sure would be nice if one of them could finish in the top 3.

I'm cheering for the Bama boys too, but they had a tough day.

Maybe I'll cheer for Furyk.  After all, he has my backswing loop!

I think Hunter Hamrick is a good story that ABC Sports is not giving any air time. He shot +1 yesterday and is +5 overall 6 shots off the lead. He is tied for 18th.

I can not find a story about him turning pro. He was a senior on Bama's golf team that played in the NCAA Finals two weeks ago. He flew from California direct to Memphis to qualify for the US Open. He entered the tournament as an amateur I think. He had an (A) beside his name which has been removed. On Friday they showed a list of Amateurs making the cut and his name was there. Yesterday the amateurs making the cut list did not include him.

My guess is he turned pro when he made the cut. Why not, he graduated and most likely could use the pay check. If he can shoot even par today he will get a big check. A strong finish will help him get some sponsor exemptions so he can play without his tour card. He has to be thinking last year Bud Cauley did something similar to this and earned enough money to get his card without going to Q School.

Another big plus is my qualifing for the US Open and making the cut he advances to the second round of Q School. That will make it much easier for him to earn his card.

I have not given up on Michael Thompson. He is also +5. He has had trouble hitting the fairways since round 1 and you can not play this course from the rough.

Good luck to all the Bama players in today's final round. Roll Tide.

As we were driving to Iowa on Friday afternoon I was listening to ESPN radio and they were discussing the tournament. The one person on the show made the statement that Michael Thompson wasn't the story of the tournament so far but it was all about Tiger Woods. My blood pressure immediately jumped up hearing this. Here was a young man leading one of the most prestigious golf tournaments on one of the hardest courses to beat and it wasn't a story. This is why I don't like Tiger Woods. When he plays in a tournament it isn't a golf tournament coverage of the event, it's the Tiger Woods show with him getting all of the coverage. It makes no difference in who is leading or doing well in the tournament, it's all about how well is Tiger doing.

There is a 17 year old kid that is a junior in HS who is at +3. He is a good story but I am sick of him. Between him and Tiger Woods no one else gets any air time. The kid is a Texas commit so that just adds to my dislike for him.

Michael Thompson is working his way back up the leaderboard. He has a 4 footer for birdie to put him at +2. Furyk leads at E.

This course is very tough, kudos to the young man.

Who knows, the way this course is playing he could end up in a playoff.

The way things are going, he could win it outright.

Webb Simpson hit a great chip on 18 and sinks the putt to finish +1 knocking Thompson out of contention. Still a great effort by MT.

Simpson wins. MT finishes tied for 2nd. I saw a special that the Golf Channel ran on Simpson the other day. What a class guy. He is a devout Christian and a big family man. What a great accomplishment for him and what a great performance by Michael Thompson. Congrats to both!

The short birdie putt Thompson missed on 16 or 17 ended up costing him to tie Simpson and force a playoff. Good tourament and payday for MT. He did us Bama fans proud.

I was OK with Simpson winning. He is a good guy. I am also glad to see an American win a major.

Thompson won $695,916 for his T2nd finish.

Hunter Hamrick made $31,979 in his first pro event. Making the cut as a qualifer was huge for Hamrick. Not only does he get a check he advances to the second round of Q School.

We had a stormy night, so I didn't get the scores until this morning.  Must have been a fun finish, despite lesser-known players vying for the win.  Thanks for the updates, boys.
